Idea for Mushroom Fruiting Chamber
    #23882099 - 11/30/16 03:36 PM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I have been thinking of ways I can make a cheap mushroom fruiting chamber easily and I came up with a design which makes use of the fact that the cakes are already in mason jars, so simply remove the lid, and replace it with an alternative lid shown in the pictures.

Positives and Negatives of this design.
*has not yet been tested*

+ Easy to use
+ Easy to make
+ Discrete and Small

- Mushrooms can only grow from the top
- Must use proper color plastic to allow light to permeate through the chamber. I'm interested to see how the fruiting chamber will work considering it is covered from the sides.

It's a work in progress as I have not yet cut the other 2 walls, but so far, so good.

Will a fruiting chamber like this have any chance of success?
What are the potential downsides?

A plastic sandwich baggie over the top is way less complicated haha.

But even then, a tote and some perlite isn't that expensive either

I have seen setups with plastic bags but I really wanted something robust that I can reuse, I was also worried about the possibility of the mushrooms being pushed around by the bag, so I decided to forgo the bag and make a plastic box. It's pretty simple, the main reason I like it is for size and it means I don't have to transfer the cakes to a separate fruiting chamber, and therefore birthing is not necessary either. Taking out two steps I could easily screw up, now the only concern I have left is where to get the 6500K lighting.

you seem to have a lot of free time on your hands. use that to research what
the mushrooms need to grow besides weird chambers.

do more research dude.

fruiting is the most important part and you want to take steps out?

You still need to birth in order to dunk it though. There isn't really
enough space in the jar to dunk in the jar and dump out the water.

Interesting, I was under the impression that dunking is an optional step mainly used when birthing cakes early, before the primordia have formed, and once they formed it wasn't necessary.
Guess not.

Of course. That's why I'm here. But if I can avoid steps to hopefully make the process easier and less easy to mess up, then that's the place I'd like to start from.

Pftek mix is made on the dry side, dunking is absolutely not optional.

If you want it to work, and I mean work right, then you need to dunk
those cakes before you fruit them.

will dunking cause the cakes to expand by a large amount? How is it fitting the cakes back in the jar? Doesn't sound fun... I like the soda bottle FC

The cakes will shrink a tiny bit after they consolidate, but they won't
absorb so much that you can't get them back in the jar. You can try
dunking in the jar, but I don't know if that'll be enough water

the best method is to just buy a tote and make a SGFC.

SGFC is ideal but not small enough for what I need.

If you're going to top fruit your jars you could just put them in a monotub and use the verm barrier as a casing layer

If you only have a few jars, buy a smaller tote!
