steam sterlizer/bags
    #23876811 - 11/28/16 11:16 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

So I'm looking at building a steam sterilizer this summer. Looking at an atmospheric pressure @ 3000 feet in 55 Gallon plastic drum.

I'm looking at using an old metal grate or something instead of growers wood base. Should fit just fine, going to look through some scrap bins for the grate.

This will just be used for saw dust / bran bags only. I've been reading that it should be 8-24 hours minimum. This is a huge windows.

I plan on pre sealing .5 micron bags like gr0wer to prevent contamination
Still unsure if they would last sealed in a pressure cooker.

Also most bags are over 18 inches tall. My flow hood is 18 tall and 24 wide. I'm thinking of down grading to shorter bags and raising my flow hood on some wood blocks.

I spill a lot of grains and add a lot more than needed to out compete any comments introduced.

My only suggestion would be metal will rust, unless it's galvanized or stainless.

True, it is only supporting the bags so rust shouldn't hurt anything.

You can get an industrial epoxy coating for inside your barrel that might hold up.

I was thinking plastic and not a metal barrel.

Yeah thinking a 1500W water heater element and a steel water level control like gr0wer.

I am still not sure what to do about the flow hood being 18 inches tall. If I should just get some 2 by 4s and raise it to work with bags that are 18 inches long or raise it even more to deal with longer bags.

I've got some xl bags and my filter is 18"x42" . I just lay them on their side . Have to do that anyway to seal them.

Ahh I always try to work in the center of my airflow and not near any of the sides. (mine being half your long) I also assmume you are working at an angel and dont have the opening on the bottom.

Have an issue with spillage and how long do you leave your flow hood on before you start working?

I got mine for sale in marketplace  I went to a scrapper and got the back of a SS fridge cut out. Used that for a ring and made two C pieces to hold the bottom up. Cost me like $40 and about 30 min of cutting/grinding. The C shaped legs can be seen here

What happened to your plastic sterilizer?

1k for a stainless steal looks nice and all but little steep for starting off lol  Think ill end up building my own plastic one.

(I know a drum that size and metal cost close to 800 alone)

In your op you said .5 micron bags and presealing. Im not 100%, but I believe 5 micron bags are presealable, not  .5

The 5 micron bag is made of a different material than the .5?

.5 microns used in steam sterilizer not a pressure cooker.

5 microns is more pours allowing more through Things down to 5 microns where .5 is half a micron if I am not wrong. Generally 5 micron bags are a little bit cheaper.

I run .5 and 5 micron presealed through my pressure cooker just fine.  The thing to remember with .5 is to let the pressure drop slowly if they are under any pressure so the bag can equalize while it cools and not pop the seal.

I have a 1ft x 2ft LFH and I use the big Unicorn bags for 5kg spawn/bag - I mounted the filter vertically. Must have made well over 3000kg of spawn, bag to bag without any issues.

To steam sterilise you need to monitor the core temperature - ie the middle of the middle bag and start your timing from then.- 12 hours.
