Mushroom inspired TV Series Episode: Extremism or realism of bad trips?
    #23881061 - 11/30/16 09:37 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

I just watched the episode called "Playtest" from the series "Black Mirror" (Netflix), you might be able to find it online somewhere if you don't have Netflix. Black Mirror Series 3 episode 2.

They use a device to put in the subjects head called "mushroom" and he goes into a self-introspecting trip.

This episode, in my opinion deals with whats possible in extreme bad trips. I have some constructive/destructive criticism but I find the episode to be very well made. I am very interested in reading what other shroomerites have to say about this episode.

Someone I know has never had "bad trips" and he don't get any OEV at all even at 5g of dried p. semilanceata so hes probably not the best person to describe if whats shown in the episode is possible with mushrooms or not but let's figure it out.

This should be along all the rest of mushroom related media and probably a must watch when people want to know what a bad trip could turn out like.

That is nothing like any shroom trip i have been on. More like an acid trip gone bad.

Very good acting though. The guy was cool but not too cool to be likable. Funny parts also. I think I will start from the beginning series. Seems like a great show.

"It uses your mind to find out how to best frighten you".

I've definitely had this experience on LSD. Only my brain can figure out how to best scare me.`

"Nothing in here can physically harm you"

Well yea, it definitely didn't feel like that. Felt like some supernatural powers from another Universe were messing with my consciousness.

"We can pop you out at any time"

Ah, the benzos of course! Strangely enough, Xanax was one of the main themes in my last bad trip.

"Is this real?"

Yep. I've definitely said that before. I saw the sky rupture open, the ground shatter like an earthquake and the trees going form young to old, dying and being reborn. It felt like the Universe was imploding. All I could think was "Is this real? I'm tripping. Xanax. Stop."

---

While it is a very interesting frightening episode I don't think it can compare to the sheer mental insanity that a bad trip can be. In my experience, the visual/audio/tactile hallucinations come second to the sheer mental effects of it. There's a general fear of losing your mind/the end of sanity/consciousness/everyone having the worst out for you. The mental anguish of a bad trip is indescribable until you've experienced it yourself, it's torture on the highest level imaginable. The closest they got is the total memory loss you experience, feeling you've lost your sanity, inability to recognise yourself, and the strong urge you'll do anything to stop it. I really like the bit at the end where he hallucinated the woman saying all those bad things, that is very accurate. Along with how he snaps out of the experience and is very shocked at what he just experienced and it all turns out to be a false awakening...

Sorry if this seems a bit scrambled, I was writing it while watching and judged a bit too early on some points, there's quite a bit of a twist! Seems like a great show.

When I watched that it really reminded me of some of my most terrifying moments on LSD.

Good job, but they can't duplicate the 1st person pov, and the emotional experience.

that is my FAVORITE episode of black mirror. it really fucks me up every time. it totally made me think of a bad psychedelic trip. in fact it is pretty similar to one. on psychedelics, you can create the things you see with your mind. on the episode playtest, you can also create the things you see with your mind. the fact that he thinks he is losing his mind is similar to someone on psychedelics who thinks they have forgotten how to talk or walk. i find it VERY fascinating.

The first two seasons of Black Mirror and the Christmas special were far better imo, season 3 just seemed to be complete rips on movies/shows that have been done before.
This episode for example, took majorly from a sci fi film Existenz;

"Video game designer Allegra Geller (Jennifer Jason Leigh) has created a virtual reality game called eXistenZ. After a crazed fan attempts to kill her, Allegra goes on the run with Ted (Jude Law), a young businessman who falls into the role of bodyguard. In an attempt to save her game, Allegra implants into Ted's body the video game pod that carries a damaged copy of eXistenZ. Allegra and Ted engage in a series of experiences that blur the lines between fantasy and reality."

But yeah, still enjoyable.
And I was thinking of the similarities to a bad trip ofc.

I have it on netflix and they only have parts of season 3. They do have the Christmas special though, which I thought was the best of them all. Too bad I watched it first. :frown:
