Rate my fruiting setup.
    #23881010 - 11/30/16 09:11 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hey guys, I was planning on using a sterilized bag of hydrated popcorn to colonize, but I wanted to fruit in many small aluminum loaf baking pans.

They are about 4 inches tall and I was thinking 1.5 inches of substrate and casing it with verm. After this process i'll keep em near a heater covered in saran wrap with holes poked in for fruiting.

These are the sheets.

Can anyone spot any foreseeable problems with this tek?
If it works out well then i'll do a formal writeup and try to improve upon it gradually.

The idea is that there wont be pinning on the sides from light exposure, the aluminum is impermeable. This allows me to split up my substrate and have a mini terrarium for each one, separating each other from possible contamination and fruiting fast, small, and with one or two flushes.

Well, mycelium will eat through the aluminum. So if you plan on reusing those, they'll need liners. Also, lighting is not considered to be a main pinning trigger; it has a lot more to do with microclimates that form between the substrate and the container it sits in when the subtrate shrinks from moisture loss and consumption by the mycelium. Liners can help prevent this.

1.5 inches isn't a lot of depth; you would strongly benefit from a deeper sub so that the myc will have a much larger reservoir of moisture and matter to continue feeding on. If I were you, I'd fill those all the way with spawn and sub and then fruit in an SGFC.

How cold does the space you plan on keeping them while they fruit tend to get? Anything above 65 is good, and I don't recommend keeping a heater right next to the trays; it will dry them out.

This belief that light causes side pinning is never going to go away is it?

Seriously though, I wouldn't really consider a sub depth less than 3 inches. I mean, why wouldn't you want to maximize your yields?

Eh, there's lots of misinformation out there. Members here do a good job of keeping things up to date. But even with the bad info we still learn.

There ARE other websites out there, books and youtube that IMHO feel fuels a lot of this.

My uncle Pete once told me to get a loaf of bread and soak it in lemon juice then bury it 4 feet in the ground to make LSD. Seriously. A friend of his told him that was how its done. Word of mouth is the worst for spreading bad information. Especially dangerous shit. :paranoid:

I guess I'm just a little biased. I've spent countless hours wading through all of the misinformation out there. Rewind a few months and I have never even had a grow!

So when I see people asking questions to things that I know have been answered before.. well.. I guess everyone learns differently. Hopefully someone else searching for answers will see this thread one day.

Right. The idea of when posting anywhere in cult is to keep that in mind (years later other people will be reading and learning) So our conversations on misinformation is important. Also if you come across an old thread that has misinformation its encouraged to post in that thread correcting the information. Or if its like making LSD with bread and lemon juice (dangerous info) then to report it too a mod and have it deleted entirely.

Blame Terrance McKenna, he' wrote it in his mushroom cultivation book and that's how I got the impression that light causes pinning. I have noticed transparent containers pin more on the sides than dark green plastic ones.

I havent looked into the book. Before I joined the shroomery I had purchased RR's videos and had been emailing back and forth with him. (after like 5 emails he sent me here) I had asked him if I could get all the video info in a book just to consult  incase I didnt have access to his videos. He told me he was working on it but the more new information he gathered or discovered the more he was having to go back and update what he had done already. Now I fear he's stopped his book work all together. Although I completely understand.  :feelsbadman:

These trays had a 1-1.5 inch depth. I just had to mist a little more to compensate. IMO depth really doesn't maximize much, the grower's abilities maximize it

You had to mist more to compensate for what Mad? The smaller sub depth?

agreed.

ooold grow of mini. these where big fuckers in 1 inch trays. not even spawned.
just mashed up cakes with a top layer of coco/verm. <-nub

@jacobstorm.

for the water. large fruits need lots of water. small/thin subs cant retain that much.

Yep the depth. The surface would dry up every day if I didn't mist at least once a day. I also had lots of FAE going too, so I had to mist to compensate that as well.

I don't mind misting, it gives me more practice on how to tell if a substrates surface is hydrated properly or not.

Interesting. So, the sub is basically just a reservoir. With less depth it requires more maintenance as to not let the water run dry. So, more depth = less worrying about water supply running out, but also longer colonization time.

The overall size of the sub should have an effect on the total yield though, should it not? I'm not talking about the actual size of the fruits. The total weight post-harvest.

this guy grew from a 2inch sub in a mini mono.

I agree again, with madseason.

i dont mind misting a bunch if i need to.
its kinda fun to do a small 'micro' grow with a tiny sub to 'micro manage'
you learn alot:thumbup:
