I've thought of those places for sure. Aren't they a bit expensive? Do you live there?
Funny you'd say Oregon, given your username.

Denver is a really nice city to live in IME, tons of stuff to do
The main problem is that rent here is ridiculously expensive
That and all the homeless people trying to bum money all the time

Lion said: Hey Pubbers. I haven't posted here in a long time, but I've been mulling a move back to the USA after years living abroad, and I want to get some opinions on what city or area I should choose.
What's important to me is being able to be outdoors a lot, preferably with excellent hiking opportunities around. Indoor rock climbing gyms would be great. Nearby beaches with waves would be good too but you can't have everything.
Good local food (restaurants, pubs, and co-ops/organic food markets/farmers markets) and a vibrant local music scene would be lovely too.
General chill vibes, friendliness of people there, and any other interesting cultural stuff going on, also factor in. And of course there's got to be some kind of local job market and affordable housing. I mean I'd love to live in Northern California / the PNW, but realistically I think I'd be more comfortable financially in the southeast. I'm not actually sure what I'd do about work if I moved back Stateside, but I hope that if I find the right location, the right livelihood will find me.
Thank you.
it sounds to me like you want Vancouver BC, not the US... and dont forget, trump is president now so you dont really want to live here anyway

I always think about Boulder, never given much thought to Denver. Seems like it might be just a bit too big for what I'm looking for. I've been living in very large cities and want something smaller and quieter.

I've not been to Boulder yet, from what I've heard it's a total hippie town if you're into that scene
I don't blame ya for not wanting to live in a big city anymore tho, Denver is definitely a pretty hectic place to live, it's the first "big city" I've ever actually lived in and I definitely prefer more rural areas, but finding a job here was a piece of cake for me

Flagstaff az is cool. It doesnt have the beach but there's good hiking there and in surrounding areas, sedona (a supposed chakra of the world) and the grand canyon. For the SE, charleston sc is a nice historic beach town. I've heard good things about st. augustine Fl too.

cities are expensive to live in but they have the best music scene.
I recommend Portland and Eugene as well. Washington has some good ones, Seattle and Tacoma come to mind. I know theres hiking and nature for sure.
Cali is expensive but nice.

I live in a place in California called the Mojave Desert. When settlers first were given land here they actually gave it back to the government because the land was thought to be completely inhospitable. It gets to 110°F in the summer and Easily 20°F in the winter with up to 70 mile an hour winds(although it's only gotten that high a few times. If you choose the West Coast do yourself a favor and move to Northern Cal,Colorado,Oregon or Washington. Theres tons of really nice beaches in SoCal and amazing unique desert but most folks who move here regret it soon after.

Boulder seems like a really lovely place.
If you are open to the northeast(we have outdoor recreation too! and definitely have indoor rock climbing gyms, the largest indoor one on the east coast is right here in Philly, but I don't think Philly is what you're looking for - I think you'd probably love some of the smaller towns in SE PA like New Hope, or a city like Bethlehem which has a pretty good music scene and is under 100k in population but is close to NYC/Philly and close to the mountains) maybe take a look at Burlington, Vermont? Really lovely, forward thinking small city. The rents will be higher than the southeast, but lower than Denver and Boulder/Northern CA/any big city.
In the south I would recommend checking out Asheville, NC.

All the hippies on the east coast are trying to move to asheville. the cost of living is super high tho, at least compared to the rest of the SE. You should look into Boone nc. it's like a miniature, lesser known, cheaper asheville.

Maybe things have changed recently, but I live close by and have always known it to be expensive. I've met plenty of people in the carolinas who'd like to move therre but can't afford it.

There are a lot of cities and small towns that are right along the ocean in Washington that would be a lot cheaper than Portland. You could probably find a decent place for a few hundred bucks a month.

Bethlehem is really really nice nowadays. It definitely experienced a wave of gentrification and has a ton of stuff to do now that there wasn't when I used to live there.
Never been to New Oxford(or maybe I've passed through it) lots of neat little towns in the Southeast region of the state that are very artsy - new hope/doylestown(another recommendation) and bucks county in general is an absolutely beautiful place with a high emphasis on music and arts, but anywhere that's not shitty in PA has a slightly higher COL(but it's still less than most places in the Boston-Washington corridor).
I think Asheville is a good choice though, it's definitely popular and as such rents are definitely gonna be a bit on the higher side for the South but it's definitely a lower COL than most desireable/hip cities in the country.

Rent may generally be higher in the south, but way cheaper than nearly any city in the NE. Asheville is still probably cheaper than Nashville

Hey Lion!!!
I was thinking Asheville while reading the OP.
There are also some pretty good spots in the North East + a much more liberal/progressive vibe.
As cool as Asheville is, I personally wouldn't want to live anywhere in the US other than the North East or Pacific North West coasts.

I do not recommend Long Beach based on what he said. Too far from nature, it's a dirty filthy city, the only thing it has is the beach which is also polluted and dirty.
Also he mentioned Portland being too expensive, there's no way he could afford Long Beach or anywhere along the coast in California then.

Check out Sebastopol, CA.
Hip spot close to a large enough Nor Cal city for a job market (Santa Rosa). Only 30 min from the beach. Hiking and coop farms everywhere. Rent is cheap compared to everywhere else around here in California.

I live in the PNW and have lived all over the US. If I was single and wanted to live in the united states I would live on the big Island of Hawaii. Cheap rent, lots to explore, tons of ladies looking for D, and it's not too small like the other islands.. I found work there within the first week so it can be done.

I do not recommend Long Beach based on what he said. Too far from nature, it's a dirty filthy city, the only thing it has is the beach which is also polluted and dirty.
Also he mentioned Portland being too expensive, there's no way he could afford Long Beach or anywhere along the coast in California then.
Hey man I don't know when you last went but they've cleaned the fuck out of long beach lately. At least there's not syringes all over the beach, LOL. I actually fucking love the shit out of Long Beach. It's probably the realest city in socal. I want to move back there. But seriously they have been cleaning the place up its a lot nicer than it used to be. Yeah I wouldn't go swimming in the ocean there... but just go 10-15 miles south or north... no big deal. LB is awesome as fuck. It's got character and culture out the ass and its centrally located. There's nature to find..

Thank you.
This sums up a good percentage of Asheville, North Carolina. Appalachian mountains, musicically inclined area, stout craft brew scene, good food variety and quality, very friendly hippie vibe. And the beach is 5-6 hrs away. Not the best beaches, but beaches.

Don't get me wrong, it's a cool city with its own character, but based on what OP was saying it sounds like he prefers a place that has more rural scenery, isn't too expensive, and just not really a metro urban city.
Yeah OP Hawaii is not a bad idea either. Just realize that it may be really difficult to find a job especially as a non-native Hawaiian (Hawaiians hate it when out of owners move to their state), and Hawaii can be very expensive especially in Honolulu.

If you're thinking about moving to the South for financial reasons, then save yourself the hassle and time. You're just gonna end moving again in a year or two like all the Californians do, and being a complete cock about everything in the meantime. Cost of living is an overrated metric because once you factor in wages it levels out a whole lot for most places. There's gonna be overly expensive places like San Francisco or NYC, but beyond that it evens out a hell of a lot when you factor in wages.
I'm kinda interested in Hawaii, myself. It seems pretty expensive though, but it's a tropical fucking island so it might be worth it anyway. I just want to BBQ everyday and go surfing.

I used to live in Honolulu. Yeah I'd move back to those islands in a second if I had loads of money or I felt confident about long-term career prospects there, and also if I knew some people there. I kind of feel I need to move somewhere that's at least a long weekend road-trip away from people I know, and I didn't make any long-term connections there before.
Thanks again to everyone for putting in their two cents.

Everyone wanting to go to CO.... It's expensive and the natives are some of the most pretentious hippy assholes I've ever met. Anyone in ANY locale who wears a "native" shirt or has the sticker on thier car should just fuck right off. Boulder is full of people who are sure they are better than you simply because they are from boulder and can ride a fucking snowboard. Pretty sure the lack of O2 has caused brain damage over the generations. The weed is ok, nothing you can't get anywhere else, cost of living is rediculous and all of the crusty trustys, homeless and train kids ruin most of the metro areas. Sure, it's beautiful and the music is outstanding, great place to visit, to live??? No way. I know at least 20-25 people whom I worked with in the restaurant industry who moved out there and came back to the warm water, low taxes, friendly faces and amazing food of the southern US. I guess age, finance and lifestyle would make a difference. I just despise people who are sure they are better than me before we ever even have a conversation based on where I am from. The upper Midwest is also a nice place to live. MN, WI, MI, IL are all nice places to call home. Good luck OP Dick

Try Fort Worth Texas or Dallas. Great prices on rent or buying, and there is country-ish type living just outside the city limits. I am from Fort Worth. It is a little/big town if you know what I mean. It has a smallish town feel with big city things, and Dallas needs no explanation. I loved the Dallas nightlife and things to do there. I just like Colorado a little more for now. I may end up back in Texas someday. I think the weed thing will pass in Texas in a few years though, so maybe Texas is your place? The heat got to me though, I just can't stand that heat these days. Austin might be good as well. Check out Waco, Mansfield and the surrounding towns around the DFW area.

Texas is a big fucking state. Two of the chillest most 'west coast' esque folks in my life right now come from Austin. That may be out of OP's comfort level in terms of budget. A few years ago when I looked at rent prices I was floored at how cheap it seemed compared to the northeastern cities.
I could never live in Texas due to weather and palmetto bugs alone, and if I'm gonna deal with all the bullshit of a big city I want one that I can comfortably stumble around in without needing a car(though since I've been leaving my own city lately for family obligations, I am bringing my car back into the city juuust as soon as I live in a neighborhood where finding parking for a three row SUV won't be a neverending battle and headache), but there's a lot going on down there and some undeniably cool cities.

I'd love to visit New Orleans.
Could never live there. That humidity. We had a bad heatwave and the humidity and heat hit Louisiana territory for a bit in August and I remember sitting in a bar under misting fans at night(it was like 95 degrees and the humidity was staggering and it was almost 1:30am) and asking someone there "How do people in New Orleans do this like all the time?!"
and he was just like "....they drink".
And we clinked glasses and the craziness of that place suddenly all made sense.

The Ozark mountains humidity is stifling as well. All the hills and valleys, waterways and forest area.... my lord. People literally sit outside on the porch drinking sweet tea with whiskey or shine all day. Back in 2011 when we were working a resort area down there it was over 100 for over a month and I swear you could see the moisture in the air. Thank gods there is a very large body of water near where I was to cool off. The kitchen was almost unbearable down there. I could not do it anymore. Dick

Alaska, Washington, Montana.
I've been to about 20 us states. That's what I'd say stands out the most to me. AZ and Florida suck. Too hot. California is cool but driving there is a nightmare. Oregon wasn't all that it's more or less a less watered down version of Washington.
My thoughts I've never explored the east coast besides Florida.
After reading the op Alaska for sure. Hell if you're cool I could probably get you in touch with people. Hiking, rafting, snowboarding, the list goes on and on. Great state. Good work as well. At 18 I was averaging 25 bucks an hour.
