Cactus ID help
    #23880914 - 11/30/16 08:20 AM (7 years, 1 month ago)

Hi I recently got into cactus and succulent growing but I'm having a little trouble with some identification of a couple unlabeled species. I was wondering if I could make use of someone's knowledge.
http://   thank you very much.

Nice plants

My guesses would be

1. variegated Astrophytum asterias "nudum"
2. Lophophora williamsii v. caespitosa
3. Lophophora jourdaniana
4. Lophophora williamsii v. caespitosa

Thank you so much for taking the time to help. I've done my reading and searched everywhere but there is always doubt in my ability to properly ID, these spineless cacti are very similar looking at this point for me. I have read a few post claiming l.diffusa are rarely found (which of course makes me want to get one) any truth to this? Again thank you.

L. diffusa, not being self fertile, and perhaps a bit more fussy with their watering, might be a bit more rare, but not overly so. They are my personal faves

As for the ID's, what points to jourdaniana for #3 is what looks like the presence of juvenile spines on immature areoles, a trait of jourdaniana, keeping the spines beyond the seedling stage. Try to compare yours with some shots of jourdaniana spines to see if this is the case.
Flowers are the best way to confirm a loph ID.

It depends, a lot of those asian vendors sell a lot of koehresii/fricii/diffusa under the same false name

if you want true diffusa the best way is to get some seed, that way you can choose a locality type as well,
of which there are far fewer than williamsii so should be easier to choose, at least for me

Does this look like a l.diffusa? I'm still struggling to identify without help.

I hear you. I'm trying to be patient but labeling plants is important to me. I know what I was told it is but that's not necessarily the truth.

your best bet is to label it as you bought it and fix it once you know for certain.
Nobody can tell you with certainly until it flowers  just the way it is
