Rhizobia Inoculant for Desmanthus illinoensis?
    #2388041 - 02/29/04 03:24 AM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Has anybody here grown D. illinoensis successfully? Is a Rhizobia Inoculant nessisary? Do I need a specific one? Which one is best? WHere do I get it?

The supply of a high quality inoculant for Illinois bundleflower is necessary for widespread use of this species on agroecosystems. Selection of an inoculant quality Rhizobium will be field based, aiming to identify highly effective strains in N2 fixation with this host, competitive in nodule formation and broadly effective across different plant sources. The fixed nitrogen by IBF with promising strains will be estimated to improve our understanding of the contribution of this species to perennial agroecosystems sustainability. Field experiments will be held at two different sites using three different ecotypes.

Inoculation with Rhizobium spp. prior to planting is important, even for natives. Some genera, such as Desmanthus spp., have specific inoculant commercially available; those warm season species that don't should be inoculated with a general cowpea inoculant. If the legumes have been successfully cultivated in the target area within the last few years, inoculation may be redundant since the appropriate rhizobium populations may still be present in the soils.

Use special Desmanthus inoculum strain CB 3126.

How do you cold stratify them, and for how long?

one method is damp sand in the crisper.

I got pretty good germination rates with D. illinoiensis with no special treatment at all, just damp soil and some bottom heat. When I tried growing them indoors, the leaves dried up and fell off after they got taller than 2 or 3 inches. Another time, when I transplanted the seedlings outside before this stage, they grew just fine and I didn't encounter any problems. I think it's pretty safe to assume that the absence of nitrogen fixing bacteria was the cause of the dieoff. The Rhizobia inoculant would most likely solve the problem, but it's not necessary if you transplant them outside early enough (or, presumably, if you took some soil from outside and mixed it with the potting soil you used.)

for D. Illinoisensis i'm not sure i never found the need to cold stratify. But it's dependent upon each species you're going to grow.
