is grain too dry the culprit?

So when i strain my grain after simmering I keep mixing it around thoroughly in a metal bowl and let it dry to the point where i can run my hand through and my hand doesn't get wet and I let the temp cool down to the point where its not going to make any extra condensation in the jar. Am I letting it dry too much? a lot of my agar to grain jars seem to be stalling out and was wondering if this could be the culprit. I'll put in a whole wedge and even after a week i'm not even sure if the mycelium has colonized 2 layers of grain deep.

I use rye grain, i'd have to post pics tomorrow. Could letting it cool down too much cause excessive evaporation from the grain? Like the outside feels dry but the grain still feels pretty warm so i let it sit out a bit too long

Doesn't make sense to me... Honestly from my experience so far if they're a little on the dry side they colonize a little quicker than usual because they use up the resources faster.

but where is the fine line between a bit on the dry side and way too much on the dry side? would you say your grains are still warm as your loading them or do you let it cool down completely?

When I load my rye grain into the jars, the grain is still slightly warm.

that's what I was thinking because if the outside of the grains are dry and you just let them sit til they're cool that means they keep losing moisture, once they're just right you gotta load those jars up quick.

When I load rye into my jars, there is a small amount of condensation building up on the glass.
I recommend to just make the paper towel test shown in Roger Rabits Rye video. Do it twice or three times while drying the rye and the first time no water stays on the paper towel, load them in the jars. Then they are perfect.
A slight amount of condensation after loading and also after PCing is good

i've loaded my grains an hour after simmer, and 24hours after simmering. don't over think it. drier is safer but not always better. use gypsum
