White Cap Cubes Growing Alongside typical looking ones?
    #23879372 - 11/29/16 06:59 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Hi. This is my first post here, first flush and my first grow. They've begun fruiting approximately a week ago, they've been slow since the beginning, inoculated back in early October.

I'm fairly confident it is a fruiting body and not a contam, I am however not sure what it is? A mutation? A different strain? I'm not sure of the latter since normal looking ones are growing on the same cake, and on the other cake which were inoculated with the same strain (Cambodian). They were acquired through one of the sponsors here.

Note: If this can be confirmed to be a different strain or even species, then I guess this should be moved to the strain forum?

Thanks,
- Smallpox

It's more than likely just a mutation. Although one of the pictures look greenish to me so it could be contam.

The second pic down almost looks like the cake has a nose of some sort haha

Yeah, it does look greenish in the pic. It's black though, I'm fairly sure it's the nearby biggest normal looking mushroom on the other cake which has released spores, since the coloring comes from that direction and all the mushroom got it at exactly the same time.

Hmm... Could a mutation explain the slow growth too?

The white growth? As the coloring on it is really just spores looking weird in the lightening, they've been there for a few days now and haven't gotten bigger or denser.

You should harvest what you can and toss the rest.

Thanks for the advice but I think I'll wait, it's been there for a few days and I've seen spots like that before, everything's growing quite fine, it's even grown since I posted the pictures.

EDIT1: Plus there isn't really anything of worth to harvest quite yet, those are the only two cakes...

EDIT2: Just took a wet Q-Tip on it, nothing comes off. I really don't think this is contam.

On second look there does seem to be brown spots too, so I picked it off. The others seem just fine. If it's contaminated, it really hasn't been for long, it's not even skin deep.

If it is indeed contaminated then the bacteria has already colonized and you can't just pick it off.

Grow out what you can but toss anything unusual. No need to get sick or make people sick.

The whole thing looks unusual to me. It's unlike any Cubes I've seen, barely even looks like the Albinos. I've cut the supposedly infected part open, there's nothing in there. The whole thing turned blue, even the supposedly infected spots.

The bacteria is probably causing all the odd mutations and imperfections

Any idea what bacteria it might be? And what makes you think it's a bacteria as opposed to mold or similar?

Ah!

https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/19962918

My pics might be slightly misleading, but they look exactly the same, same color too! Now I regret picking the "infected one".
