Amanita muscaria?

It looks exactly like what I've seen in books but some say they are poisonous and others say the are psychoactive. Are they edible and if so, how much is recommended?

I've heard of them being psychoactive if the spots are boiled off or something along those lines but I'm pretty damn sure they are just poisonous. They grow all around my area and I never pick them, cool looking mushroom though. I would wait for someone with more info on this mushroom

They can be poisonous if dosed improperly Do your research my friend as it is a quite mystical mushroom Although if you are expecting a psilocybin experience wrong you are. Browse the forums or erowid you'll find what you're meant to.

they can be edible if you boil them in water and discard the water afterwards.
there hallucinogenic if you heat them up to dry in a oven at 190 F to convert ibotenic acid to muscimol. although this trip is not a "feel good" type of trip. definitely do your research on trip reports as side effects can be unpleasant. dose for these mushrooms can be felt with an average low of 5g to a high of about 15g-20g(PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH ON DOSING). these mushrooms are always different in potency so always start low and work your way up when experimenting.
Also this is rarly done(i assume), but the tribal people of the old days use to drink their urine to prolong the trip.... not recommending just saying you COULD.
if you just let them dry or eat them raw i believe they are or can be poisonous as the amount of ibotanic acid is dangerous for the body.
PLEASE do your own research to decide whether or not you want to eat them and as to how much is the recommended dose by other trip reports, also look into the effects of the mushroom so you dont end up hysterical in the midst of a "Bad Trip".

Thanks a lot for the help all. I've been doing research and have found mixed results. Basically where I'm at on it is start low and go from there. By your replies it's pretty clear that this is an amanita muscaria but if someone could confirm I would feel much better.

The best way to confirm these is to carefully dig up the whole base of the stem(the volva) as one of the key identifying features of this mushroom are the 3 rings on the base of the stem. Without that it will probably be hard to find someone willing to give you a 100% ID

It wasn't found nearby so getting the volva isn't possible... But this is what I do know, according to books. The measurements in () are from what I've read:
Cap is 24cm (12-25cm)
Stem is 17cm long (10-20cm) by 4.5cm wide (3-5cm). Smoother above annulus and hollow. White but bruises yellow to tan
Gills are white, closely spaced and free from stem
Annulus is white. located on upper portion of stem and hangs downward.

Research how very important the 3 rings above the base of the stem are for identifying an Amanita Muscaria.
Thats all I can really tell you man. If you think you can identify it without that critical feature then good luck man.
Personally I totally think it's a Muscaria but without that feature I would toss it.
Edit: The books also consider it a poison mushroom. They are not going to go into detail on how to properly ID it for consumption. They are going to show you the main features to avoid it.

I can't enlarge the second pic, can you cut the cap in half and post a pic?
There should be a thin yellow layer between the white flesh of the mushrooms, and the red part of the cap, also please post some large pics of the top of the cap.

Dang, wish I had known the volva was so important. I'm a novice obviously so thanks for your patience and input. Also, I was camping when I found it and it was a few days until I was able to start the id check. I cut it up and have started the drying process so I can't provide anymore pics and I apologize. Still researching and want to be certain before consuming but at the same time didn't want it to spoil. I do specifically remember a very thin yellow layer though. Here is the cap photo again. It should let you enlarge now.

I believe you have Amanita muscaria, I can see the yellow underneath the red cap, I can't think of any other Amanita which looks like it that is so red and with warts, and such a large stature.
If you're in the USA, then you probably have Amanita muscaria var. flavivolvata, if you're over seas, then you have Amanita muscaria.
My personal recommendation for your collection, is to go back to where you found it and search for more, and make sure to collect the whole thing for a proper ID.
