Recycling Substrate?

This may sound a little stupid, but after entering a discussion with a fellow grower on the bus, he brought up the idea of recycling substrate from spent cakes. He said that he planned on taking several spent cakes and chopping them up and mixing it with fresh substrate (verm/brf) to (hopefully) increase the potency of his fruits. I mentioned that i thought it would fail maybe due to the preexisting mycelium, but it sounded like a very interesting experiment! Anyone know if this would maybe increase potency or even work at all?

Theoretically it should not help . Why .......? Because you have used up many of the nutrients in that "spent" substrate material , and there are waste products from the earlier generation in the old sub that will greatly increase the risk of contaminants . Now spent cases are great for your normal run of the mill gardening .

Grind those spent cakes up and use them to spawn a tub of pasteurized straw and dung. You'll love the results.

would doing that be faster than innoculating/incubating with spores? This method certainly has a lot of appeal for me as it does not require too much work!

Recycling cakes can work to create more substrate, but not for "increasing" the potentcy of fruits. As dog said, just grind em up and spawn some straw with them...you WILL love the results
