edge of agar plate concerns

I've heard RR talk about when cultures grow too close to the edge of the plate bacteria is a concern. Anyone have an opinion on this? is it only a problem when it literally touches the edge? I use 3 section dishes and all my work is done in the center of a flowhood and parafilmed immediately

Ideally you don't want to take myc from there because of a higher chance of bacteria, but it is usually not a concern of mine.

i've been finding that by taking pictures of my colonizing plates and zooming in on them on my computer i can see much more of what's going on than just by eye. sometimes there are tiny spots of bacterial colonies that i just couldn't detect otherwise. and it's always good to leave an uninoculated control plate out while doing your sterile work to see if your technique is on point.

Ever notice that when you have a contam it's usually near the edge of the plate?

That's often the first place you notice bacteria because it will enter from the sides of the lid or the space between. I don't worry about it though, to me it's like saying to scrape off the top and bottom of your WBS jars because that's usually the place most likely to be contaminated. Well yeah, but if I have a contamination in either of those places I'm throwing the jar out, I'm not going to spawn it and take my chances and if I question whether my agar is clean or not I'm likewise not going to use it, I'm going to keep making transfers and clean it up while figuring out what I did wrong to allow that contamination to enter in the first place.

I think it's pretty obvious why you shouldn't let your myc grow to the edges of your plates, or use any culture transfer/wedge from the edge. Bacterial spores will often get through the edges of your plates and land on the furthest edge, and stick there. Letting the myc grow there will allow bacteria or mold access to the mycelium, and many times will ride on any transfers or wedges you may take, This is why you always want to take from the middle of a sector, especially if you see any satellite colonies anywhere on the dish, especially near the leading edges.

That's the reason why I never drop a whole plate into a rye jar. When I inoculate with wedges I also cut out the wedge like a pizza slice but without the edge part.

How does it differ with pasty plates is it because the walls of the container are taller?

Well it may not be i just dont trip on it because you have a lid that fits on kinda snug rather then a loose ass petri thats why you wrap petris with saran wrap to help wiyh contams

Yeah I notice molds form on the edge of my pasty plates still every so often. Not enough for me to really trip about it though. I always let my plates fully colonize before I noc jars.
Edit: I was wondering why the word trip came to mind while typing this. I rarely ever use it. Then I realized I picked up from your last post
