Trich* and yeah toss. Why is there a thick layer of myc on top of the substrate? Did you like later your grains or something?

It's the oats... I think that is where I'm screwing up. Do I need to conceal all my grains with the sub?
That was a attempt at a layered tub. I don't think I'm doing it right.

Was your spawn clean? How did you make your substrate?

I think it's evident the spawn wasn't clean. I personally don't cover my grains, but I know many who put a top layer on after mixing the grains and substrate. Don't layer them)
It's quite evident the grains are bacterial considering the huge thick band of bacterial mycelium on the layer of grains.
I'm assuming you inoculate the oats with agar?

Yup agar to grain than I used a sterilized cvg mix. Shit I wish I had a yard. I live in an apartment and barely find room to shove totes.

How do those look, I think your able to see the dates in the pic but if not one was 11/16 the other was 11/19

Cvg doesn't have to be sterilized. Pasteurization is preferred.
I hated the days of apartment living. I know the feeling.

I haven't gotten around to trying pasteurization yet. To be honest, if I remember right the jars I used on the tubs I lost were pretty bad. I'm starting to get the hang of it all though. I have 7 tubs in my inventory 3 small 2 mid and 2 large. I really wanna work with my cultures more and get consisitancy out of my grows.

How come you're substrate is so deep? Looks like it's 6 inches.

I was wondering if it was a crazy nutrient layer and the rest of the spawn was just mixed in.

Your diagnosis is accurate. Are oats known for bacterial issues? Just started a project a while back using oats for the first time. Got my ass kicked by bacteria. Did a 120 minute PC cycle with quart jars and inoculated with a clean agar wedge. Apparently that wasn't enough. Some insight on your experiences using oats would be greatly appreciated.

Any grain can have a high endospore population depending on the source, this is why I always recommend people to switch things up and find the best grain/brand in YOUR area.
Larger grains are even harder to sterilize too because of the larger air pockets acting as insulators. This makes oats, one of the largest grains I've worked with, one of the hardest grains to sterilize. Unless every jar had bacteria introduced from the agar or something (also a possibility if we don't see clean agar pics from the op ), you probably have endospore problems. I think you should try other grains/brands out if you're having endospore problems. Even upping the pc times to 3 hours can't kill them all IME.
Oh and I don't like the sandwich thing mixing is much better. Many more inoculation points spread around, and with clean spawn, you can have grains on the surface without any protection.

I've never layered my tubs, never really considered it. Ehh, I guess it's not really necessary. But, clean spawn, is most certainly needed

I used to layer my tubs back in NAM
If it's already pinning or near pinning I would just put it in a different room away from the other healthy tubs you have. It will fruit most likely.
