Need help on a print identification!
    #23874271 - 11/28/16 06:24 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I have two unknown prints that are labeled PCA small and medium. Obviously the strain name has three words and i don't think it is a cubensis. I haven't looked at the print, fear of contamination. Help me to figure out what species I have.

Psilocybe cubensis Amazonian or Albino

What color is the print? Strain names have no use in growing hallucinogenic mushrooms other than marketing. I would pay them no mind. Other than confirming the spore color matches or does not match Psilocybe, there is not much anyone could do to identify them without extracting DNA or actually growing them out.

^^this. Grow them and if they turn out to be something else, you can come back laughing at us.

I know they aren't a cubensis. The person I received them from only dealt in exotics. I just wanted some help trying to figure out our narrow down what it could be.

Would a panaleous or other psilocybes drop different colored spores?

As Byrain points out, it is not possible to determine a species from a spore print alone, unless you get them properly analyzed.
You should contact your supplier and ask what species you got. There is no way we'll be able to guess just from three letters.

Panaeolus/Copelandia will have jet black spores. Other Psilocybe species will have dark purplish-brown spores, similar to P. cubensis.

They are purplish colored. Very light print with gills spaced unusually far apart.

If they are purple you can cancel out Panaeolus cambodginiensis and any other Copelandia, as aforementioned. If you think it's more exotic than albino P. cubensis start looking through Psilocybes with species names starting with "C". Try getting in touch with whoever the source was.

So you likely have a Psilocybe species, which one is very hard to say at this point.

OP claims it is not P. cubensis, so we're looking for a species, not a strain.

As long as the provider hasn't given any information as to what it is, only that it is supposedly
an "exotic" species (does this imply a subtropical one, or merely including any species rarely
cultivated?), we can only guess what the labelling stands for. Did s/he get the print from a
wild or cultivated specimen? We don't know that either.

So, without any mycologist version of Sherlock Holmes to help, I don't see much point speculating.

Exotics meaning any other active mushroom beside p. cubensis. It was from a guy on spore traders, who only dealt in"exotics". I can't find him anymore, here actually waited a few months before sending the two prints so I forgot what we had discussed. I thought it was concerning pans or Azurescens but I didn't want to say that and look stupid. There are so many cubes with their names starting with an a that for me, it wouldnt be worth my time posting here. I know I sound like an idiot but it was right after I first got into growing. So I really didn't focus on the name. I originally thought it was p. Cyanescans mexicana-a.

Okay, then you basically won't be able to know which kind of substrate this mushroom favours.

What you can try to do is send a spore sample to a lab that does DNA sequencing, like Alvalab in Spain.
At the same time you can try to grow out some mycelium on agar, then if you eventually get a result from
the sequencing, you'll better know what substrate to use for spawning.

Thank you somebody understands, that's what I planned to do was grow on agar. Can I tell what it may be from mycelium development.

I don't think so, no. But you can sequence the tissue. As I said, send
it to a sequencing lab. It doesn't cost too much, if I'm not completely
mistaken, probably like $ 30 or thereabout for one extraction.

You should however ask someone on here who are familiar with the
process. I have never sent any stuff for sequencing.
