I know a guy who changed his name to the name of a famous Polish scientist. I thought OK...... so you now have the name of a famous scientist. Weird. But then i thought, I don't think my own name is all that great either. Hmmmm, I can think of a few names that would suit me better. What if I did it? Would it be shameful?

Okay, Okay... I'm trying to empathize a little more... Your father named you Felicia, and now youre resentful about it because you finally realize it to be life-long joke about how you'd never truly be his son?
Am I close?

i think its shameful to change ones name. I associate it with trashyness. Like that guy who changed his name to "trout fishing" or something like that

I said not at all, but upon reflection if it is because you are ashamed of your name more than having another name that you really like, these is some shame involved. I didn't like my name when I was like 5 years old and wanted to change it, but I was just being a baby. It's just a name.
Sometimes I want to get a namechange here at the shroomery, because I never put much thought into this one and for a while it seemed kinda infantile to me when I started posting here for non-research, but for the most part I just can't be fucked. Who really cared anyway?

When I was really young I spontaneously started going by a different name as I hated mine
My name was very long and Hebrew and hard to pronounce as well as having some religious overtones...
As a kid it really annoyed me no one could pronounce my name and as I had long hair as a kid too people often thought I was a girl which was more annoying. Eventually I stopped caring but I stuck with my nickname.
Now I think of it as my middle name and use it for everything except official stuff that needs my legal name. I don't have an actual middle name so it worked out perfectly.

That depends on your family, culture and circumstance I guess. There would be shame for me for sure, most of it would be self induced though.
If you didn't grow up with your father around or something it's a good reason to create a new family name that doesn't exist yet.

It's 2016, there's no shame anymore.

Ephesians 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Hebrews 11:3 Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear. Revelation 3:11 Behold, I come quickly: hold that fast which thou hast, that no man take thy crown.

My parents used a new last name for me anyways Apparently there is some girl with the same last name as me who is the daughter of a friend of theirs.
I always hated having a hebrew name as everyone assumed I was jewish as I have a big nose But I am pretty sure that is from my spanish side...

Not really. People change their last name all willy nilly every day.
Just a preference.

But I tend to have a more "whatever" attitude. I could see some family members taking it the wrong way.

Maybe they should had picked a better name. I might change mine soon. It's alot of paper work to change though if you've already made a life for yourself.

"Thanks for taking atleast 10 months to figure that out but don't you think it could be cooler!?"
I'd be so disappointed if my kids changed their names. They were blessed with me being awesome.

Not to change it legally. It's fucked up to have a different name on facebook though.
