UK Cyan habitat
    #23865050 - 11/25/16 12:48 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all, long time lurker and hunter, though I have never really found anything worthwhile. Recently turned my attention to cyans.

I understand that the primary habitat that people find these in is on woodchips, however I don't have much of that around me at all. What I do have however is a lot of very old unmanaged woodland with an appreciable amount of decaying wood, all over the place.

I've found quite a few mushrooms in the undergrowth that are cyan lookalikes, and I have found several patches of lookalikes of various types on decaying wood itself (galerinas). My question is.... is this an indication that I should continue looking in these wooded areas for cyans? Is there any realistic chance that I am going to stumble upon a patch or two like this? Surely woodchips can't be the *only* habitat that they are found in?!

Ominous! But not very helpful I'm afraid.

Am I wasting my time looking through the forest for P.Cyans?

I read a story on the shroomery where a guy hiked for days in the forest, picking cyans and tripping non stop.

Im sure they are in the forest, i mean, it is a wild speices, its just the species prefers more domestic habitats like wood chip beds and grassy lawns at peoples houses.

I would recommend looking for logging roads: chainsaws make wood chips and over time, cyans might grow off the decaying chips.

You are more likely to find conifer psilocybes (ps. pelli) in the forest, but im not sure they grow in the UK.

I see. Seems I need to keep searching then. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't totally wasting my time looking in the woods. Cheers.

I believe you still have the best chance in man-made mulch beds.

I'll keep that in mind, thanks.

When should one *stop* looking for Cyans?

I guess it depends how long the freeze stays. A quick dip in the blue numbers will possibly give them
an extra push for the final flushes. I don't have direct experience with this species, though, but seeing
others like P. semilanceata and a diversity of species from Hypholoma, Mycena and Psathyrella
(among others) fruiting during cold spells makes me think a good deal of saprobic fungi growing in temperate
regions are quite hardy.

Your best chance is man made wood chip (not bark) beds. Newly built housing estates normally have lots, flowering beds in gardens/parks is also a good place. Cause cyans grow in bunches that only cover a small area it's not like libs where you can search a field find 1 and know theirs more. You are looking for a tiny maybe 1x1m patch in a whole forest which is probably why you dont hear about cyans in the forest much here.

The only time so far that I have found ps cyanescens was next to a fishing lake, inside and around a big old rotted out oak stump (north east greater London area). I have no idea if they got there naturally or if someone had spawned them there. I ate about 10 of them and had a very colourful enjoyable trip.

I think just keep your eyes to the ground when out walking whether out in the woods (or edges of woods), supermarket carparks, woodchip beds around buildings etc and you may find some.

Right, found a lot of these in a wood chip bed, covering a small area. They were all frozen solid and looked pretty old, but I figured I would try my luck anyway.

Still waiting on a print as they are frozen, but here's some pictures if anyone can id this species.

nope sorry, those look huge - cyans are quite small - the cap is about the size of a golf ball normally

Yeah sadly those aren't cyans. The cap of cyanescens are more of a caramel color, as well as the stems being a solid pure white with very noticable blue bruising. You are on the right path, I've found those before while out on the hunt. On another note, cyanescens usually start to go dormant after the first big frost so you better get out there and find those remaining stragglers before its to late!

Yeah I figured the odds were slim just from how freakisly huge they are, clung to hope though

There's really no other woodchipped areas for me to look unfortunately : /

Next year I guess.

I'd love to try cultivating some cubes or something, but I don't feel comfortable buying a print from a website, what do?
