Beautiful Mushroom Chocolate TEK to spread the love * 5
    #23865847 - 11/25/16 11:49 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'd like to give back to the community and offer my recipe for making seriously kind mushroom chocolates - chocolates you can be proud of when you give to friends and family.

I started making my own chocolates when, one year at Dark Star Jubilee,  I bought one shaped like a play-dough turd, wrapped in a plastic bag with a tie wrap to hold it in place,  with 1 measly gram of cubensis in it.

Good chocolates have the following properties (in my humble opinion).  A proper dose (capable of getting a large man off), delicious, quality chocolate, and proper presentation.

A proper dose:

I'm talking about enough for a person to hit a level 3 trip if they eat the entire chocolate.  Let's stop being stingy with our doses.  We're doing this to spread the message, so let's do it right.  When making with cubensis, I load 2.8 grams into each.  For cyans, I'm stacking them with 1.8.  I want these chocolates to be able to be eaten 1/2 at a time if someone wants a fun, light trip.  If they want to blast off, they can eat the whole thing.

Quality Chocolate:
I buy dark chocolate melting wafers, 10lbs at a time.  It runs less than $8.00 a lb - a worthwhile price to pay for delicious chocolate.  If you like milk chocolate, they sell it too.

I bought some rubber candy molds for less than $15 a mold.  I have a few of them so I can make a bunch at a time.  I wanted my molds to reflect my mission, so I chose hearts.  You can have custom molds made for pretty cheap.  Imagine the phish logo in a candy mold!

Here we are using a candy mold with enough space for 12 chocolates.

Step 1:  Prepare your ingredients
We're using Cyans, so we're going to load them at 1.8 grams per chocolate.  That's 21.6 grams total.

Through experimentation, I've come to learn that we need between 320 and 370 grams of chocolate to fill our molds.  It's easier to weigh the chocolate than measure it with a measuring cup.  We can be much more precise.

Step 2:  Melt the chocolate and grind the mushrooms
The chocolate melting wafers melt easily.  However, they also dry out easily.  You don't want to melt them directly in a pot on the stove or they will probably dry out. Salvaging dried out, chocolate can be done by adding more oil, but it's a pain in the ass.

Instead, take a corningware pot and put some water in it.  Place a glass bowl in this pot.  Heat the water on low heat.  Eventually, the bowl will get very warm.  Add the wafers to the glass bowl and they will start to melt.

While the chocolate is melting, grind the mushrooms into a fine powder with a coffee grinder.

True story time:  A decade ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the "North Florida Shroom Wizard."  He used to have a website and a grow guide and whatnot.  This was back in the late '90s.  He told me that the mushrooms spoke to him and told him that they didn't "like to be ground up in a coffee grinder or blender.  They didn't like to be spun around so much."  That may be true, (I have no idea), but this is the only way I can think of to pulverize them so they go uniformly into the chocolate.

Step 3:  Slowly add the mushrooms
If you are using cubensis, you're going to have a lot of powder to add. This will make the chocolate stiff and a little difficult to work with.

I add a little at a time, ensuring that every last bit of chocolate has a uniform amount of mushroom in it.  I've heard that psilocybin degrades in heat, so I try to keep this step pretty short.  (A few minutes max).  Stir the hell out of it.  It's important to make sure it's uniform.  We don't want one chocolate to have a ton of powder and another with almost none.  Remember the goal - provide an awesome chocolate that people will enjoy and will be happy to have received.

Step 4:  Load the chocolate into the molds

I use a small rubber spatula and a spoon.  I take a scoop of chocolate, put it into the mold, then use the rubber spatula to scrape the rest into the mold.  This takes practice but is easy once you get the hang of it.  I aim for uniformity.    However, at first, I'm just trying to fill them up.

Once all the chocolate has been loaded, I "tamp" the chocolate down with my mini spatula.  Then I can remove some from the ones with too much and put it into the others.  I try to make each the same as the next.

Step 5: Set the chocolate
I like to put it into the freezer for 15 minutes or so.  This solidifies the chocolate allowing for easy removal.  If you try to remove the chocolate and a little bit sticks to the mold, you know you needed to leave it in longer.

Step 6:  Wrap them
For wrapping, I like to buy candy wrappers made with super thin aluminum foil.  It comes in different colors and usually costs about 10 cents a sheet.  You can buy packs of 100 for less than $10.

Remove the chocolates from the mold.  The rubber molds make this step super easy.  They pop right out.

Here we're using pink.  Careful wrapping as the sheets can tear.

Voila!

Cost:
Let's talk about how much this costs for each chocolate.

Chocolate:
We used 320 grams of chocolate for 12.  320 / 12 = ~27 grams of chocolate per chocolate.
Chocolate cost $7.00 a lb or 454 grams.  That's 700 / 454 = 1.55 cents per gram of chocolate.
27 grams * 1.55 = 42 cents per chocolate

Aluminum candy wrapper - .10 per wrapper
Price per chocolate
42 cents for chocolate + 10 cents for wrapper = .52 cents.  Not bad.

Thanks all.  I hope to see a bunch of these kind treats on tour next summer.

We had a hell of a season here in Washington.  I went hunting about 5 times and pulled about 250 dry grams of Cyans.  One day I found 100dry grams.  In one day.  We were blessed.

I would be afraid to do this because of this right here

I feel like i would make these then dose, then the mushrooms would tell me something like why would you grind us up? Why would you dis honor us like that ?

Great job. Thanks!

One question. Did you think about tempering? It will improve the presentation and will not melt in ones hand.

I use a mortar and pestle, seems more respectful.

Great presentation.

Something like this is a great way to dose friends with an aversion to mushrooms, people who would appreciate the experience, but can't  bring themselves to eat a shroom in it's original form. My sister, for instance, loves shroom's effects, but will vomit instantly if she is aware that she's ingesting them.  Only time I've successfully dosed her is with concentrated tea added to cranberry juice.

I would definitely do the chocolates more often if I had access to those potent wood lovers you got out there in the PNW.  Cubes just leave me with too much powder and the chocolates end up gritty to the point that my novice friends get grossed out anyway.  Not worth the effort if using Cubes IMO.

I've done hundreds of these with 2.8 grams of cubensis in each one.  I just increase the chocolate to 370 grams for the 12.  They taste amazing.

Thanks for the comment!

But if you're in a hurry, and really got to go
If you're in a hurry, might have to find out slow
That it's one thing to try and another to fly
You get there quicker just a step at a time
It's one thing to bark, another to bite
The show ain't over till you pack up at night
