Mushroom Mania 2016 7

Been a busy year for me, not nearly as much time to hunt as I would like. That being said, I did manage to get out yesterday and spend the day doing what I love most. It is still a bit early here around Napa/Sonoma for our real good edibles. But I did find a lot of neat stuff, and still managed to fill my belly with some tasty fungus.
Since I know a lot of us like a bit of good myco-porn I snapped some photos to share! I will keep updating this post as the season progresses with my best shots.
As of now, the hills are filled with Death Caps. So many I cant count... This is pretty normal around here though, they are one of the first mushrooms to appear once the rain begins.
Amanita phalloides

Also a lot of Jack-o-Lanterns about.
Omphalotus olivascens

As for edibles, I bagged up on honey mushrooms and Laccaria. Not the best... but not too bad.
Armillaria mellea

Laccaria laccata

On a whim, I decided to check my Morel spot from last year to see if anything was happening. It is early, but they can be unpredictable. I'm glad I did~
Morchella rufobrunnea

I found some other cool stuff too -
Boletus erythropus
Mycena haematopus

Some cool Panaeolus species.

Polyporus leptocephalus

Some dangerous looking Conocybe...

These goopy Cortinarius are always a kick.

I also found the biggest Oak bolete (Xerocomellus) I have ever seen!

Sadly, I failed to find any Candy Caps in my regular areas. There were plenty of our local inedible look-alikes though...
Lactarius xanthogalactus

And last, but certainly not least - Some local Psilocybe allenii

Things should start picking up here in another month.. I can't wait for my first local Chanterelle of the year. It is still fun to get out regardless.

Did you eat any of those Laccaria laccata? And if so, were they any good?
I'll have to keep an eye out for those next season.
I found bunches of the purple gilled laccaria this summer but wasn't really into the flavor. Too shroomy for me, but still a good texture and beautiful mushroom.

Yeah they are not bad. Not a whole lot of flavor, but excellent consistency (since they are firm and rubbery).

I use Laccaria as a filler in soup when I've found not quite enough. Works great and they'll absorb the flavor from the soup.

Yep all from the same day, but I must admit I know this area very well. Been picking mushrooms of all types around here for several years.
I started the day scouting around town for a few hours, then hit the hills for the rest of the afternoon.

On a good day on the coast it's possible to see over 100 species. Usually the problem is finding time to take pictures of them all.

I'm on break for the holiday and went out to my favorite local hunting spot today. I only had a few hours, but boy was it productive. Our Napa Chanterelle are looking mighty fine. I barely scratched the surface, only checking a couple of the patches I know about.

They can be hard to spot, often you only see the "mushrump" in the duff.

There are some big ones out there too! This early in the season I don't normally find them this large. Certainly not for the last several years.

I also found a decent haul of my favorite edible Russula - Russula cyanoxantha.

There are lots of blewits under the oaks as well.
Lepista nuda

I found a nice large "blusher" too - These guys are very tasty cooked up in some salt and butter.
Amanita novinupta

Candy-caps are having a decent year too -
Lactarius rubidus

Some other common finds in my area -
Helvella dryophila

Cortinarius sp.

Galerina marginata

And finally a small Hericium erinaceus. I will be back for this guy in a week or two.

They are great, a flavor that reminds me of almonds. They stay crisp too, even after cooking them well. More like water chestnut in consistency than traditional mushroom. This is assuming you have a good fresh one (the stem should be firm, not spongy for best eating). Give them a try next time you find one under your local oaks!

I made another trip out to my local hunting grounds today looking for Chanterelle. Things are looking nice.

I also found some Ganoderma lucidum (reishi), it is not common at all around here. This one was 8 inches tall!!

Some very fresh Turkey Tail (Trametes versicolor)

And some neat "False" Turkey Tail (Stereum hirsutum) Growing from a stick.

I found a few nice clusters of Hericium coralloides too. I love eating this stuff. What a great texture and flavor...

Lots of the edible Grisette (Amanita constricta) to be found too.

A pretty little Psathyrella I snapped a photo of.

An especially attractive fruiting of Phyllotopsis nidulans.

Some cool coral fungus too - (Clavulinopsis fusiformis)

All said, it was a great day. It rained a bit, but I came prepared with my water-proof hunting gear. School starts up again tomorrow, so I really needed to get out there before things get busy again. Happy New Year everyone!

You didn't find any? That's too bad. You probably walked right past a dozen or more. At least around here, rarely are they actually visible. I just walk around areas where I have found them in years past and look for lumps in the leaves.
Chanterelle have an indeterminate growth cycle, and will continue to grow as long as conditions are suitable. Because of this, I find that scouting new territory is better done in mid-February or even early March if the rains continue. At this point they have gotten so big that they can't hide anymore. Then next year you can return to the same area much earlier and poke the leaf-lumps in your now-known patch. Because poking every lump in the woods is time-consuming and rarely successful.
Better luck next hunt!
Edit: Speaking specifically about the Cantharellus californicus species. Other Chanterelle species do not behave in this fashion as far as I know.

nice finds lhun. I found some hercium as well the other day, really good eating. I think that ganoderma you found is unique to california and Ive been meaning to send Mrcloudy a sample i found for microscopy. I've been looking for them recently, but forgot about them after I only found old decaying ones. I figured they were late summer here just like everywhere else. sometimes it seems like our season starts much later than everyone else's for a lot of species, so I was hoping to get lucky. Now ill definitely be on the lookout, really want to make some tea. btw, was it growing at the base of a bay tree or an old log/stump?

It was in the hollow of a fallen oak tree, growing up in deep leaf-litter. I think the deep layer of leaves is why the stem got so long. Are they more common in your area? It is the only one I have found around here and I hunt my area pretty good each year. You are in Sonoma right BurtonRebel?

Interesting, Thank you. And nope shouldn't be a problem, Ganoderma tend to be more uniform when they are dry so dried specimens are easier to compare. The moisture content in fresh ones is variable and can alter the appearance.

Typically G.lucidum is absent from North America. It seems to be present in the area surrounding Salt Lake City Utah as an apparent introduction. There is a second possible occurrence in Northern California. This one is curious to me as I have a sequence only from a single sample and although close, it is not a perfect match to G.lucidum.
I think it might be an indigenous subspecies or variety. But I have several other samples but haven't gotten the DNA results yet.

cool! Thats similar to the habitat i found mine in and I'm in the east bay lhun. Crazy long stem. I have only found 2 and they were in the same general location. I found some really old G. oregonense which is way more common I think.

Super awesome finds Lhun... Very excited to find chanterelles in our back yard in Napa instead of driving hours away. This is my first year to find them here. I must say the ease which the rest of you find such quantity is ridiculous! Been an amazing year for Hericium too.
On reishi, I did find a handful 5-6 this year in the area. Never looked for them before, didn't think anything of it, and I only picked one out of interest. Funny I find these more odd species over the seemingly gregarious chanties!

I see, Australia.
Compare your red ones to Ganoderma weberianum and your brown one to Ganoderma australe. You should be able to do a prick test on the red ones, stab the white with a sharp implement and see if it bleeds a yellow resin. If it doesn't then compare them to G.steryaertanum.

No ill intent here either! Threads that are general "official" threads are meant for specific posts usually(edibles, actives, etc of a specific region). Threads made by individual hunters to share their finds are open to discussion but usually not open to additional irrelevant pictures(regardless of how cool they are). I was more kidding than anything. You do have a nice collection of pictures and finds though, that a lot of people here will not see if they've already looked at Lhuns thread prior to you posting them. They are certainly worthy of their own thread!

On reishi, I did find a handful 5-6 this year in the area. Never looked for them before, didn't think anything of it, and I only picked one out of interest. Funny I find these more odd species over the seemingly gregarious chanties!
Nice! Glad you found some good stuff out here too. This is a great area for mushrooms.

Napa California, the heart of wine country. (Though I don't really like wine... ). Sure is a nice area though for many other reasons.

I made a quick trip out to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park today to check on a few Chanterelle patches I discovered last year. I found some huge ones!

Some of them were pretty water-logged from this crazy weather we have been having. No rot, just really wet. Anyone have any good tricks to dry them up a bit before I cook them? If they are too soggy, the consistency is bleh... Usually I just keep squeezing them out with paper towels every few hours, but I was curious if anyone else had other tricks they have used in the past (fans, oven, ?).
Happy hunting!

Paper bag in the crisper in fridge. Or fan blown across them laying on the bag.

Since there already laid out. Fan them I would say. Nice finds by the way. They are huge.

nice monsters there. we had some waterlogged ones like that this past summer in the east. a friend has a convection oven so we put them in it on the lowest setting and kept checking them every 15 mins or so; that worked well.
IOW, fast moving, dry, slightly heated air did the trick in about 30 mins and made her kitchen smell awesome.

The fan worked great, I just kept rotating them every hour or so until they dried up, but didn't dry out. Thanks for the tip.
In the past I have tried to just let them air dry in the garage when I picked soggy ones. The "red rot" set in though, and they never dried out well.

That is what I have been doing this season. I usually have to wash the mushrooms, especially lately with all of the rain and mud.
I have been getting my fill in the East Bay hills.

Also finding lots of honeys:

And tons of candy caps:

I went out this weekend looking for Chanterelle in a few known areas. Because I have been so busy this year, I had not visited this spot at all this season. Oh my god was it doing well... Yes - all those flashes of orange as far back as you can see are mushrooms!

A few other interesting things about -
Clathrus ruber

Hericium

These were new to me - a Helvella species perhaps? Or maybe a Xylaria? Anyone recognize them?

I also found this little guy when I flipped over a Chanterelle... I have seen many bugs under mushrooms when I'm out picking - but NEVER a fucking scorpion!

All in all, it has been a stellar season here in northern California. In the next week or so I will go check my Amanita velosa spots - something tells me that they will be looking mighty fine.

Cool scorpion! Can't say I've ever seen one under a mushroom either, must have been a bit startling.
Your earth tongue could be Trichoglossum or Geoglossum. It appears to be fuzzy so I'll guess the former.

Omg that scorpion Lhun!
Scariest thing I've run into was this mama snake and her little one. I was taking pictures one time and didn't even notice them next to my elbow. They were camouflaged really well and was so lucky they didn't move!

Great pictures as always!
