Mushroom Mania 2016 7

Been a busy year for me, not nearly as much time to hunt as I would like. That being said, I did manage to get out yesterday and spend the day doing what I love most. It is still a bit early here around Napa/Sonoma for our real good edibles. But I did find a lot of neat stuff, and still managed to fill my belly with some tasty fungus.
Since I know a lot of us like a bit of good myco-porn I snapped some photos to share! I will keep updating this post as the season progresses with my best shots.
As of now, the hills are filled with Death Caps. So many I cant count... This is pretty normal around here though, they are one of the first mushrooms to appear once the rain begins.
Amanita phalloides

Also a lot of Jack-o-Lanterns about.
Omphalotus olivascens

As for edibles, I bagged up on honey mushrooms and Laccaria. Not the best... but not too bad.
Armillaria mellea

Laccaria laccata

On a whim, I decided to check my Morel spot from last year to see if anything was happening. It is early, but they can be unpredictable. I'm glad I did~
Morchella rufobrunnea

I found some other cool stuff too -
Boletus erythropus
Mycena haematopus

Some cool Panaeolus species.

Polyporus leptocephalus

Some dangerous looking Conocybe...

These goopy Cortinarius are always a kick.

I also found the biggest Oak bolete (Xerocomellus) I have ever seen!

Sadly, I failed to find any Candy Caps in my regular areas. There were plenty of our local inedible look-alikes though...
Lactarius xanthogalactus

And last, but certainly not least - Some local Psilocybe allenii

Things should start picking up here in another month.. I can't wait for my first local Chanterelle of the year. It is still fun to get out regardless.

Did you eat any of those Laccaria laccata? And if so, were they any good?
I'll have to keep an eye out for those next season.
I found bunches of the purple gilled laccaria this summer but wasn't really into the flavor. Too shroomy for me, but still a good texture and beautiful mushroom.

Yeah they are not bad. Not a whole lot of flavor, but excellent consistency (since they are firm and rubbery).

I use Laccaria as a filler in soup when I've found not quite enough. Works great and they'll absorb the flavor from the soup.

Yep all from the same day, but I must admit I know this area very well. Been picking mushrooms of all types around here for several years.
I started the day scouting around town for a few hours, then hit the hills for the rest of the afternoon.

On a good day on the coast it's possible to see over 100 species. Usually the problem is finding time to take pictures of them all.
Beautiful photos Lhun

I'm on break for the holiday and went out to my favorite local hunting spot today. I only had a few hours, but boy was it productive. Our Napa Chanterelle are looking mighty fine. I barely scratched the surface, only checking a couple of the patches I know about.

They can be hard to spot, often you only see the "mushrump" in the duff.

There are some big ones out there too! This early in the season I don't normally find them this large. Certainly not for the last several years.

I also found a decent haul of my favorite edible Russula - Russula cyanoxantha.

There are lots of blewits under the oaks as well.
Lepista nuda

I found a nice large "blusher" too - These guys are very tasty cooked up in some salt and butter.
Amanita novinupta

Candy-caps are having a decent year too -
Lactarius rubidus

Some other common finds in my area -
Helvella dryophila

Cortinarius sp.

Galerina marginata

And finally a small Hericium erinaceus. I will be back for this guy in a week or two.

They are great, a flavor that reminds me of almonds. They stay crisp too, even after cooking them well. More like water chestnut in consistency than traditional mushroom. This is assuming you have a good fresh one (the stem should be firm, not spongy for best eating). Give them a try next time you find one under your local oaks!
