Shiitake blocks
    #23870672 - 11/26/16 10:11 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I watched GrOwers video on substrate. He was making some 10 !b blocks . Has anyone tried shiitake in xl bags like that? Has anyone tried soy hulls to supplement shiitake? Maybe GrOwer can chime in . I was worried too much substrate might contaminate.

You can sup up to 20% on the bags. They bags are still sterilized. Over supplementation leads to mutations on the blocks.

I am not sure about husk though it should work. Most people use wheat bran from a feed store though.

no soy hulls for shiitake.  yes you can do xl shiitake bags but they are too big for my taste.  just as far as handling a lot of them.  i do know someone that makes them though, i think 10 or 12 lbs bags.

I've done a experiment with 5 lb L bags vs 10 lb XL bags with shiitake, that was actually the video i shot when i was anally weighing out the bags, I typically never do this. I was getting 5-10% lower yields with the 10 lb blocks. This might actually work out to larger yields if fruiting space is a factor as you can fit 10 lbs in less than same space as two 5 lb blocks. I never did a controlled oyster test but i can tell you my biggest fruits ever were off 10 lb blocks, sort of a given. But then again big fruits are not really desirable. My guess is that 10 lb blocks the mycellium needs to transfer the nutrition further and takes up more energy and time. My massive oyster fruits were 2nd flush. I only tested first flush with the shiitake. Im currently using XL bags again but only because i had 800 of em left over and i need to burn through em. I'm making 7-8 lb bags currently just to use em up. One issue im running into is they take up more shelf space since there not filled as high. I can tell you the XL bags are a thicker mil, and much easier to work with if you have a good sealer with a good power circuit, bags wont seal on my 16ga 15A leg but seal like a charm on my 10ga 20A grow designated circuit. I really love the XL bags for spawn, and will probably always use the larger bags for that as i can cram more into my AA941 since the bags are much bigger and flex to fill all the voids, im currently running 40 lbs dry grain per cycle, i think with a lower false bottom i can probably fit 50 lbs dry grain, about 80 lbs wet spawn per run. And you cant use the smaller L size bags for 10 lbs, there is no mixing space, your limited to around 7 lbs.

How do you fit 80lBS of grain in a 40qt pc?  I could not fit a 50lb grain bag in an empty 40qt if I took the liner out and dumped it straight in...

Grain size variety. It would probably be closer to 65-70 lbs. I've been running 60 lbs wet the last 3 batches which was 15 lbs oats 15 lbs milo and 10 lbs white millet, soaked 24 hours and bagged into nine 6.6 lb bags, there is still another inch on top since the lid is a dome and i can cut my 3/4 spacers down to 1/2" since i barely lose a 1/4 of steam with my PID control keeping the rocker at a minimal rock.

The mask is a 3M half face with P100 filters I wear a medium, unless you have a huge fat face you will wear a medium or if your small frame a S. Also you need to shave for a good seal.
