These torches are nice but they require caution. I want to warn people at this point.
Be careful with locking a blow torch. If it falls down and rolls under your table or something you are doomed. Because of the high heat it easily sets things on fire.
Never use fire inside a SAB. If it is sprayed with alcohol or lysol your SAB can explode or shoot flames towards you. Some people around here learned it the hard way.

The soot is not your problem, your problem is that the blade isn't getting sterile in your lamp fire.

Just looked on Ace Hardware, Home Depot, and Amazon. Cheapest ones I could find were $20 not including the fuel...

Go to amazon.com and enter "creme brulee torch", sort by price. You'll get really good gears for 5-10 bucks
Moreover this is something, I wouldn't buy online, cause the shipping costs are more expensive than the thing itself. I live in Germany, so I don't know about shops in the US, but in Germay we have these discount stores where you can get things very cheap.
I bought a culinary torch for 5 Euro there (about 7 dollars).
Regards.

The camping section and the plbuming section of Walmart has the clickers by themselves for 1-15. I'd suggest buying the slick small plumbers one for a few bucks more. The small nozzle one. Much more quiet.

yeah, get yourself a good torch, it's one of the best investments in this hobby.
And read the words of enlightment, he's right. Only let the torch run the whole time on locked when you are very sure about your movements and did it a couple of times.
I only use the locking mode sometimes. In most cases I take my hand out of my SAB and klick on the torch to turn it on and flame my scalpel (which I hold out of the SAB through the armhole of the hand, that I hold the torch with).

I never run the torch the whole time...waste of butane if you ask me...I just remove both hands, wipe the scalpel down with iso, hold scalpel in one hand torch in other, flame sterilize. Place scalpel inside box on some sort of stand, then wipe hands down with fresh iso and go to work.

Since what I read here, you don't have to wipe down a scalpel which you gonna flame anyway It's unnecessary since the flame will kill anything anyways

You guys are super! Thanks Will def get a torch then.
One of my jars is still decent tho. But if it is my scalpel then I don't have terribly high hopes for it.

I do wipe it once before the whole procedure (or sterilize wrapped in foil with substrate, etc) just to clean up the handle but never right before flaming as my hands are often covered in iso and the flame would ride down the scalpel onto my hands.
I had to light the old style torch with a lighter and caught my gloves on fire when sparking the lighter.
now I have the torch with the electric lighter equipped.
definitely get a torch propane is cheap and effective.

Cheap propane attachments scare me, but if you've tested them whatever. Not like price even reflects quality at times.
I dip the whole scalpel in iso before starting because why not

I only buy these torches with the refill hole for propane. In Germany we have thousands of Statutes and Security requirements, so a cheap one is as good as a expensive one.
Mine costs 5 Euro and worked more than 2 years like Charme in my kitchen until I started to use it for mycology
