Spore Print Help / ID
    #23869869 - 11/26/16 05:53 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Fairly certain these are psilocybe allenii, because a few weeks ago I harvested mature fruits from this exact patch. However, I picked these little guys earlier this time, and now I realize since the veil is not broken on most of them -- how can I go about taking spore prints?..

I get nervous about the deadly galerina !

Those are Psilocybe.

But it's always good to know how to take a spore print...

Remove any part of the stem that protrudes below the cap and put one cap gills-down on white paper and a second gills-down on tin foil. Cover each with a glass (i.e. with the glass upside down so that the cap is inside it), then wait for 12-24 hours (although it sometimes takes less).

Once you have the prints, set the white balance on your camera (so that the colour is true) and photograph them. Photographing the one on tin foil can be tricky with flash, because of the reflection, so if you can, use a tripod and slow the shutter speed instead, if necessary.

Harvesting as early as you did is kind of counter productive. The fruits will get much larger and will equal more dry weight when consuming. More importantly, letting the mushrooms mature and sporulate will help kept the patch healthy.

I know how to take a spore print, my concern was that the veils aren't broken and so I wasn't sure any spores would drop. Thanks for the info though, it is helpful.

I feel you guys on the picking too early thing; still new to this. Like I said, I have picked mature fruits at this patch before. I shared the picture of the pins from a couple days ago on a different forum, asking when I should come back to harvest, and they were advising to pick very soon due to the potency before the veil breaks. I wanted to give that a try, but I definitely prefer to let them mature more. And also you can trust that I left many many still there to grow, so I don't feel I harmed the patch at all.  I do appreciate the advice though.

My main concern with this post, was assuring I have p. allenii and no galerina snuck in there

There is no potency loss after the veil breaks.

P. allenii for sure, looks like you could get a partial from the largest cap but great find man! Been looking for these guys but haven't located them this year.

I'd say the increased potency is a myth. The only thing coming of picking while the fruit's so young is a substantially smaller crop.

Two days later and the patch is totally ransacked, mycelium disturbed and not a single pin left. Wish people wouldn't be so careless/greedy.

Thats why its a good idea to try spread the mycelium around to other wood patches. U never know whos gunna raid it.

Looks like it turned into a pin-raping-contest, this is one reason I despise public patches.

I know nothing about cultivation but I did spread leftover mycelium to different parts of this particular area, who knows.
