Can someone please help me understand how to do solo's on the guitar, i practice my scales but I don't understand how they help me do improv solo's. I have looked at some videos of people doing it on youtube but they never really explain how, I just need some steps and instructions, as i'm learning the guitar without an instructor. I can do bends, slides etc and can read tabs, but when I try to improv its very repetitive.
I have come to understand that you can do solo's based on scales, but I don't understand how exactly and need some instruction. Thanks in advance for the help
post a video if you'd like

Hey man,
I, like you, have searched tons of videos on YouTube trying to figure out how to solo. Most only go into the pentatonic positions without taking it to the next step.
I'm having trouble posting links, but search "Steve Stine learn to phrase in 14 days". There are two parts. He really gets into how to craft a solo that goes with the song you're playing.
Also, of course you want to keep learning lots of solos from your favorite players and learn as many licks as you can too, and continue to develope your music theory knowledge.
Hope those videos help!
Peace

Scales "fit" over chords and modes. It's to keep it all in harmony generally, although many great solos will include chromatic notes as passing tones. Playing chord tones as holding tones is usually what occurs.
When soloing, tr and develop a melodic idea. Rather than just noodling up and down scales, utilize parts of the melody you're creating and use them in repetition but to create a story. Often the best melodies are ones you can sing along to. So maybe try "playing" a melody with your voice and translate it to the guitar.
If you have a looping pedal or another guitarist friend, play a 1-4-5 progression in e aeolian or e dorian( Em-Am-Bm or Em-A-Bm) and play either of those scales over it.

yeah just keep playing for favorite stuff, try to learn as many new licks as you can. That is what i did for the longest time and ive just recently started being able to flow with my own stuff. took me a long time, im by no means a natural though.
