I always thought alimony was an outdated concept that needs to go away. It comes from a time when the man of the house supported the family, so that idea was after a divorce, the ex wife has no way to support herself financially.
In modern times, it is almost impossible to support a family on a single income so both partners in a marriage usually need jobs unless one works his/her ass off for an education and well paid career. If a married couple gets divorced, one had the drive to get an education and work his/her way up, and the other was a mooch, why should the mooching behavior be rewarded and the hard worker be punished?
For true equality, alimony should be completely abolished. People try to use a "wage gap" when arguing for alimony, but the wage gap is a myth. Women are statistically less likely to negotiate salary than men are. Every company will try to start out with a lower salary offer no matter who you are. Those who negotiate a salary statistically make 7% more than those who don't. Any time I hear someone complaining about a wage gap, I try to point them to salary negotiation advice but it is never well received. Some people would rather blame others than fix the real issue I guess

I agree it should be done away with or at least establish a more fair system. Lots of women complain about fair wages and equality but you don't hear them complaining about receiving alimony or child support unfairly. Seems like when they say they want equality what they really want is preferential treatment across the board. I'm all for making everything equal as long as it involves getting the same wage for the same amount of work completed and that's not just women it's everyone. A lot of people get paid the same for the same job title while one does all the work and the other rides the others coat tails.
