Straw is fine, works good. Colonizes fast & easy to prep.

I've only seen straw be colonized by grain substrate. Would this defeat the purpose of using straw over grains in the first place?

“I don’t know,” Alice answered.

“Then,” said the cat, “it really doesn’t matter, does it?”

Yeah spores won't germinate on straw alone, will still have to use a spawn of some sort.
Like grain.

You can use sawdust spawn for inoculation, but grain would be better choice since you're inoculating straw and not wood.

I think straw inoculated with grain spawn topped with a layer of gardening soil as Timethyl said would be your best bet.

Hm well I guess the idea would be that instead of just using grains and horse poo, I would inoculate straw with a small amount of grains and use that and horse poo. And hopefully the reduced amount of grain would lead to animals not fucking with the patch

I think straw without horse poo would be better in terms of being contam-resistant.  But why not do two patches and try both and see how each turns out? .)

I've heard that outdoors you don't really have to worry about contams
https://www.shroomery.org/8494/Moes-Outdoor-Growing-Tek
This would be my method^

Again, BRF cakes would be fine, but obviously grains allow the opportunity for GtG transfers to increase supply. However, it looks like grains aren't the best idea for outdoors

I've decided to spawn to grains and then to spawn to straw. I'll cut the grains used to about 1/15 of what I would use if I was going with grains straight to outdoors. This way I can rapidly colonize a lot of substrate and it will be straw based spawn

Well like I said, I cased all my outdoor grows with garden soil, which prevents all pests like snails and bugs.
Worms are not a problem, they won't mess with your grow until it's more decomposed. Even if you see some worms, they are not doing any notable harm.
I did outdoor grows with grains for nearly 3 years in a row and only ever had one incident where a small critter dug up a small section and ate some mycelium(even that grow still went fine).

Do you happen to have a record/memory of what your typical spawn amount and yield was?
