First time using trays
    #23862770 - 11/24/16 07:21 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

MS. Rye grains to pasteurized coir/verm/gypsum. Wanted to wait a week before checking them but couldn't help myself, so this is after 4 days. Do they look like they're doing okay?...
All of my knowledge and past success can be attributed to this site and I am extremely grateful, so I'm sorry in advance if these next couple questions have been answered and I just couldn't find them.
Did I just mess up by taking the lids off for a couple minutes only 4 days into my bulk substrate colonizing in the trays?
When I put the trays into the SGFC, what kind of space needs to be between them for the air flow to be sufficient? Will 3 trays this size be too tight?

I might not fruit because you only waited four days. You might just get fluffy blobs I'd mycelium. Next time let it colonize for at least 10 days. 14 days is good.  CO2 build up is  important while it is colonizing.

Trays are looking good for only being 4 days along.  They should be ready in about six days, so keep them covered up and leave them alone until then.  It's best to maintain co2 levels during colonization, so don't peak more than you have to, especially if you have to take the whole lid off to look.  My trays are big enough I can lift up a corner of the lid and shine a bright light in there to look around.  I usually don't peak until day ten because subs are not usually done colonizing before then anyways.  The inch or so you have between trays in the SGFC is fine.  I look forward to seeing some pin porn of those trays soon.  Good luck!

Thank you guys for the help. I put the trays in the fruiting chamber today, wondering if they colonized enough. If not, I have another colonized jar I can spread to 4 and try again with.

Peaking isn't a big problem given proper pasteurization. Pinning occurs with more sustained FAE, not just a few minutes. Pinning triggers in order of importance are: full colonization of the substrate; 100% humid microclimate at the surface of the substrate; as much fresh air exchange as possible without messing up the microclimate; and ~6500K light for ~12 hours.

Anyways, the trays are looking nice!

They look fine, though if I were you I'd do trays in a mono tub instead of a SGFC, but it should work just fine.  It's just that the trays block the up flow of air through the perlite.  Trays in a mono will get much better and more evenly distributed Fresh air.

For sure, doing mono tubs next, just wanted to use the SGFC I made at least one more time. Also had perlite I wanted to use up.

Here's how they're looking

Are these trays raised up from the surface of the perlite? Like on a rack or something. Elevated trays are the only way I've seen a sgfc grown boss tray accomplished

I don't have a rack but I have the perlite piled up in two mounds going the length of the tub. Is that enough? Here's a pic(the lids are only there to show the height of the mounds)

You're missing a ']' at the very end. Basically jar lids on the perlite right? Could work  but I'd use the rings, and many more of them to distribute the weight

Oh, thank you. No I put the lids there just to show the height of the mounds, couldn't make them out in a picture without them. But I'm going to look around my house for something better,  maybe go buy something. Thank you for that, thought about it at some point but never got anything.

Weird, as in...? The yellow-ish myc? I've been trying to figure out what that is exactly, maybe got kinda dry at some point? It happened a little during my first couple BRF cake grows, but they still seemed to do pretty well.

Thank you, and being dry would make sense. It's been extremely cold where I live so we have the heater blasting. I covered the vent and put a decent sized radiator-type heater on the opposite side of the room from my FC, no more blowing air. Gonna see if that helps.

I'm going to guess bacteria is causing the yellowing and bubbly-looking mycelium. Check your spawn and substrate prep and see if you can find any improvements to make for next time. Your pinsets are solid, though, so keep doing what you're doing with these trays because it's working.

Thank you mushboy, freespeech, and cronicr. Bacteria, huh? Damn, okay. I'm pretty crazy when it comes to my sterile technique, but I'll try to be even more thorough in the future. After a few more (successful) grows with trays in a SGFC, gonna build a flow hood and move on to agar and monotubs, so I need to dial everything in.
Thank you everyone for all of the help and praise.

Hmmm... I think I am gonna start doing it then, kinda tired of the mystery and lack of control with MS. I guess I just always told myself that I'll need a flow hood for agar, never even looked into SAB agar work...

Almost all of this is agar done in Sabs. I also got an improve your sterile techniques thing in my sig. So many options, and if you read them all, you should be an agar god

Very lovely  although you don't need a flowhood for agar and shit. SABs do just fine. You can start bulk up literally right now if you wanted

Hmmm... I think I am gonna start doing it then, kinda tired of the mystery and lack of control with MS. I guess I just always told myself that I'll need a flow hood for agar, never even looked into SAB agar work...

If it wasn't for agar, I would've given up a long time ago. Here are some links that will help you get going:

Here's a video of them growing using a time lapse photography app on an old phone I taped to the side of the FC.

Ended up being 38.62g dry.

So while I was harvesting, quite a bit of substrate stayed attached to the fruits. It seems to be recovering, but I was wondering, should I pack them a little tighter next time? And should the pieces of substrate that come off be removed from the fruits and put back to kinda patch the dents?

Sometimes you get lucky and find a strain that peels nicely off the sub. I usually harvest by pulling out my shrooms and then cutting the sub off the stems into a bucket. I hate leaving stumps in my monotubs.

For sure. I think I got kinda used to the way they just pop right off of BRF cakes.

I've never really minded the taste of cubensis, but my wife has a really hard time eating them. So, I grind them up with a grinder(mortar and pestle works too but takes longer) and use a capsule machine to make a bunch of capsules. The size of capsules I have hold about a quarter gram each. I think it's worth it, wanted to share the idea with you guys.

Nice capsules.

You also should try this tea recipe. It's great.

00 size capsules should be able to hold closer to a half a gram if you tamp them enough, and grind the mushroom powder fine enough. I can get over a quarter gram into size 0 capsules, which are smaller. I use a coffee grinder for grinding them into a fine powder.

:facepalm3: Damn okay, I'm getting a coffee grinder. Yeah I tamp the hell out of them, almost popped the bottom of the machine out last night and I can only fit a quarter gram. Thank you for that. 20 capsules is kind of lot to have to take, but was still better than having to chew up five grams...

So, after two flushes from each tray, the final count is 64.04g dry. Thanks again everyone! Going to start agar work as soon as I get all of the supplies together.
Came across pictures from one of my BRF cake grows. That one cake on the right was covered with trich... I don't think I realized until it started to sporulate in spots, and it was gone. I think the other one in the back had some bacteria going on too.
