I often wonder about old moralities...

Could the writers of the Bible have labeled prostitution immoral simply because it would spread diseases? Could the Jewish and Muslim rule of "Don't eat the other white meat" have been made to combat Trichinosis?
Does anyone else wonder about such things?

Ive wondered very much so! Me and my brother had a discussion about this, considering all of the Kosher "protocols", not eating bugs etc. Because they carry diseases, they were more for ensuring survival maybe.
Glutiny... high blood pressure, you know the rest. Considered it very much so.

I would be somewhat surprised if people that far long ago, during the biblical ages, had any significant and real knowledge of venereal diseases. Especially considering it was only a few hundred years ago that people still massacred thousands of women for being 'witches', and only even a shorter while ago where masses of so-called civilized people truly believed Black people were inferior and deserved to drink out of seperate faucets and use seperate toilets.. But, I'm getting a lil carried away here.. Anyways, I can believe that they were probably more INSTINCTIVELY aware of it, than anything else. But yea, who knows....

back then they had knowledge of venereal disease because they could see it killing people, but because they lacked scientific knowledge they attributed all good things to gods mercy and all bad things to gods wrath. Thus, when we would say dont have unsafe sexs because you could catch and STD, they would have said dont have unprotected sex because god doesnt like it and will punish you with an std, and likewise for all the other commandments in leviticus. They were pragmatic laws based on maintaining the order of society and the power of the priesthood as well as protecting the people from disease and bad health.
Thus societys standards were enforced by attributing to gods will things that were really just good sense. (well you know what i mean) how people can find spiritual satisfaction in this misogynist, schizoid world view is beyond me, but if it works it works.

This is something I think about, too.
Somewhere in the bible, Paul (I think) is teaching people, and there are women in the group who start asking questions. Paul tells them to go home and ask their husbands the answers to the questions.
People interpreted this to mean that women were to be silent and be taught by their husbands and not speak and whatever.
Turns out that it was the men who initially were stopping to listen to Paul teach, and the women came along later, to listen. Paul had already covered a lot of material, and rather than take time to go back over stuff that had already been discussed, he was simply telling the women to learn what had already been taught from their husbands.
So I'm sure there is other similar stuff in the bible that was just for the times, that was misconstrued to be law or something.
My rendition of this is sketchy, but I'm pretty sure I'm correct.

i think it was/is all about the money.
i'm sure women had a monopoly on the prostitution market.
that was the first profession that allowed women to make their own money, thus giving them more freedom. it most likely allowed them to become totally independent of society.
they were/are not a tooth on the societal cog. most current governments still do not like these independent people. they and see them as a threat and do whatever they can to hold them back and keep them under control.
and that is my $.02

Whether or not, it brings up a very good point about interpretation.
Peace.

I think a great many of these arcane and convoluted rule systems were enacted for the purpose of elevating a rule-interpreting class to power. See today's current crop of lawyers writing laws only lawyers can understand and accountants writing tax codes only accountants can understand. The more things change....
