Farmers Grow Bacon-Flavoured Mushrooms

Oh, if only vegetables tasted like bacon then we’d eat more. Right? It seems like those prayers have been answered by Arizona farmers who sell bacon-flavoured mushrooms.

The family-owned Sonoran Mushroom Company based in Tucson specialises in growing organic oyster mushrooms they claim taste just like bacon, reports KVOA-TV in Los Angeles.

"We discovered if you fry these up in some olive oil and salt they have a bacon flavour. The texture is much different than a typical portobello. It is more like meat or bacon," John Jacobs, the patriarch of the mushroom company explained to Fine Dining Lovers.

Where To Get Bacon Mushrooms

Jacobs said the bacon mushrooms have been well received by the public and sell at local farmers' markets for $4.99 per 1.5-ounce box.

So how do these bacon mushrooms grow in the Sonoran dessert?

"We grow them in an indoor facility so we can grow them year round," Jacobs said, explaining that this practice allows the family to control the environment, humidity and temperature.

The bacon mushrooms are all-natural, vegan and do not contain any flavouring or colouring. They are best enjoyed sautéd, according to Jacobs.

The Sonoran Mushroom Company also grows a variety of gourmet mushrooms, all of which can be seen on their website.

Never had oysters taste like bacon, but could be nice. Even smoked oysters, use them for smoked mushroom salt - its great!

So any old person can cook their oysters in olive oil and achieve this?

Talk about a good way to promote sales, I'll have to verify this because it sounds a bit far fetched

These mushrooms sound like an orgasm waiting to happen, especially if they are cooked in actual bacon grease...OMG...I think I just had an orgasm thinking about it...

Considering bacons flavor is probably 70-80% fat and salt + maybe some smokey goodness this isn't too surprising.

Some mushrooms like Lobster mushrooms have a very thick meaty texture and can taste amazing with a bit of seasoning.

I've been cooking bolete slabs in bacon fat for a few years now. Not as good as bacon but still damn good!

But if the mushrooms taste like bacon you lose all the mushroomy flavours!

Years ago I walked into work, and a fellow cook was like, "dude, if you fry oyster mushrooms really slowly until they get crispy, they taste like bacon!"

I've since tried, and they do. Kinda.

If you hear people talking about flavors and colors -- like artistes -- they get so involved, so descriptive, it eventually starts to sound like psychedelia.

Although the natural glutamate in mushrooms is supposed to give them an umami quality, I like these different meat substitutes for what they really are.

Bean curd, can be made to taste delicious, but never like meat, imo.
