Massive pnw ovoideocystidiata
    #23860367 - 11/23/16 11:31 AM (7 years, 3 months ago)

I'm posting this in mh&i because I feel like it would get drowned out in mush cult by cube posts. Plus I feel like members in this forum would be more versed in ovoids. But here, check out my own Percy pot of ovoids I got started during the spring time this year. It's putting out massive ovoids with some fucked up looking characteristics.

Edit: Getting all pictures in one place

That's awesome. I'm dying for one of my ovoid finds to fruit this year so I can grab some stem butts.

I don't think the big ones look that wacky in size or shape for Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, but the color of the caps of the pins is bizarre for ovoids, as far as I have seen.

I isolated some fast growing rhizomorphic mycelium on agar then transferred to rye berries. From there I spawned to a mix of 2-3 parts alder pellets/aspen pet bedding, 1 part potting soil and let that colonize. Then I cased with a couple inches of pitting soil and sowed cat grass on top. The grass helped maintain moisture and the mycelium colonized the roots. Maybe mycorrhizae? Not sure

I mean there is a chance, I got the print from someone in the pnw actives thread last year who found ovoids. The only thing is that it's growing off straight alder pellets and aspen pet shavings. It also has been fully colonized since march so it should have fruited over the summer when it was temperate. It didn't start fruiting until mid October when it was well in the 50's and 40's. also the veil remnants are not as pronounced as cubes and it also seems like the veil remnants are low on the stem like I've seen in pictures. Also the cap margin curls inward towards the gills quite a bit. Idk I already started drying the two big once pictured. I'll let the other ones grow out and we'all see but I'm having a hard time believing cubes could do so well on just wood

Looks to me like Psilocybe cubensis and Stropharia rugosoannulata

None of them start "black" as far as I have seen. That has nothing to do with my issues with the cap color. Psilocybe cubensis DOES often have pins that color though.
The dark pins associated with Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata don't start out that color, it is a sign of oxidation, like the bruising in other Psilocybe, Panaeolus, etc..., and appears to be a result of the pins drying out to some extent and then re-hydrating before continuing to develop.

Op- this is the coolest post I've seen in a while. I can believe that they are funky ovoids. I have found Allenii that were growing from unsusual substrates with strange mutations/adaptations. I thought it was a new species, that's how unusual they can look. I'll bet your choice of substrate/casing had a lot to do with your wickedly cool results. Freaking awesome. Maybe you could print one and verify under a scope that they are in fact ovoids...

I should also note that Cubensis have been found on wood in Texas and probably other places as well

I am as certain as I could be from this vantage point that they are P. cubensis.
It is looking like the other T.I.s are in agreement.

They are far, far less picky in culture than they are in the wild.

I do want to note that the caps of the mature mushrooms were the same color as the pins not even a day ago. THe lighter color caps are due to the lack of moisture as the tops were turning tan but the margins remained brown. In my experience the caps of cubensis turn lighter from age but more evenly then in spotty sections as these did. I will continue to update as they mature although I am still having a hard time believing that these are cubes based on the behavior of pinning temps and the substrate they are growing on

 Ovoids can start that color too though.

Indeed, but the only reason some of these caps look fairly similar, in color, to the ones OP posted is because of the low lighting in that picture, and the bright lighting in OP's pics.

Also isn't it odd to find cubes this time of year in oregon?

It is odd to find P. cubensis fruiting outdoors in OR, outside of an outdoor grow, using a tent, however, The PNW is having a very warm fall so far. This past week is the first time the highs weren't in the 60's most days, at least in Portland.
