Japan has shown you can build to withstand even the most extreme earthquakes. Almost all the damage they suffered was not from the shaking, but the tsunami,

But they decided to put a nuclear plant is a volcano rich, earth quake prone, right next to ocean close to major cities and of course, not have it being able to withstand any of those things.
The Japanese man. Strange people.

Nuclear power plants need to be located next to bodies of water.

True. Then again, they could have built it next to a river. But I do understand that Japan has a geography issue. Plus the Pacific is big enough to take the nuclear fallout. It is what it is I guess.

The US west coast is a lot more vulnerable to a big quake than Japan is. They're slightly less frequent here but somewhere between Cali and BC is more or less historically overdue for something between a 7-9 magnitude.

Not to mention Mt. Rainier, perfectly poised to completely erase Tacoma and related suburbs from the map in 100 foot mudslides these are all well known facts in the region however very little still has been done to take precaution for its near-inevitability... although the "when" aspect of it could vary by hundreds of years. It could also happen tomorrow. No one knows. Hopefully they'll have some forewarning

It would probably only ever include Cali north of SF - most of that region is ideologically identical to much of western OR/WA - and is generally dissatisfied with the way that the state focuses all of its attention and resources on the insane concentrations of people in the parched south.
