I don't listen to much metal these days but I will post some of the most recent stuff I have gotten into:
First up is Marty Friedman, he was one of Megadeaths guitarists but I only know his first 3 solo albums very well and they are all killer. The first is the only true "metal album" as the second 2 get more progressive and have some beautiful orchestral elements. The second 2 still have some searing guitar solos though and are both great albums, some of Friedmans playing reminds me of David Gilmour on a few tracks.
Marty Friedman - Dragon's Kiss (full album)
Marty Friedman - Scenes (full album)
Marty Friedman - 1995 - Introduction [Full Album]
Next up is Nick Johnston, a killer hard rock guitarist from Canada who has a few solo albums out with guest appearances from many other great musicians:
Atomic Mind | FULL ALBUM STREAM | Nick Johnston
Nick Johnston - Remarkably Human - Full Album
Travis Orbin - Second Nick Johnston Session - "An Extra Emotion" & "Electric in My Veins"
Will post any other gems that come to mind, these are some of the best "heavy rock/ metal" albums I have ever heard though.

Not minding that time's passing by I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Yeesh. Im the complete opposite when it comes to metal. I listen to that mellow slow burn type psych shit. Sleep is the heaviest I'll go with vocals.

I don't even like metal vocals at all really, they usually just make me laugh for a little then I just get uncomfortable
Instrumental prog metal is where its at IMO, speaking of prog metal Liquid Tension Experiment deserves a mention here:
Liquid Tension Experiment - "Paradigm Shift" - Live
I usually am not big on Petrucci but I dig most of his playing with this group and the other musicians are all great too. Tony Levin (bass player) has played with an insane amount of top notch musicians and has played on over 500 albums including stuff from: Quote:
A prolific session musician since the 1970s, Levin has played on 500 albums, including those of Cher, Asia, Alice Cooper, John Lennon,[2] Sarah McLachlan, Stevie Nicks, Pink Floyd, Paul Simon, Dire Straits, Lou Reed, David Bowie, Tom Waits, Buddy Rich, The Roches, Todd Rundgren, Seal, Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe, Warren Zevon, Kevin Parent, Laurie Anderson, Kate & Anna McGarrigle, Gibonni, and Jean-Pierre Ferland. Additionally, he has toured with artists including Paul Simon (with whom Levin appeared in Simon's 1980 film One Trick Pony), Gary Burton, James Taylor, Herbie Mann, Judy Collins, Carly Simon, Peter Frampton, Tim Finn, Richie Sambora, and Claudio Baglioni.
So you know when he is playing with a metal group it is going to be some sick stuff

right on i get it. I've been on those instrumental weedy fuzz riffs lately. Personally not the biggest fan of Metallica, they hit their peak in the 80's. But no doubt I'll check out those geezers album.

I can get into that jam. Best vocals have to be EW an Sleep. Uncle acid and the Dead beats have that cool old sound with their vocals and same with re-stoned. But yeah I find most metal bands ruin their riffs with some brutal vocals haha.

That's probably why I like sludge/doom the most. al Cisneros has the best swinging bass lines.

I love fuzz so doom/stonermetal has always interested me, one day I would like to try and make some myself as playing with fuzz pedals is a ton of fun
I definitely will record some hard rock at the very least as I love playing with distortion a fair amount and I have a solid set up for it too.
