Hello All - Nov 2016 I found this site searching around for help with identifying mushrooms. I have a trail nearby that I walk every morning and it has been showing lots of mushrooms that I have no idea what are. My dad used to take me hunting for Morel mushrooms back when I was a kid and it was so much fun! and the Morels are delicious. I live in north Texas and there are a lot of Oak trees around my trail, I think the mushrooms growing in my pictures are growing off of dead, fallen Oak trees. I have not done a spore print yet but tomorrow I can go back and get one hen do a spore print. I'm doing lots of research on google and have been learning a lot but I'm not sure what these are. Any help?

Might be something like Gymnopilus liquiritiae, I doubt they are active.

Id call it a Gym not sure what species. I see a ring so liquiritiae is doubtful. Where are you located?

Are they really that red/orange color or are they covered in spores?

I took a couple of more pictures today and this time you can see the spores all over the place. The spores look brownish in color maybe even cinnamon.

They appear active. I'd call em old Gymnopilus luteofolius the gills turn bright orange with age.

Thanks for the help Don and Maynard. There are so many mushrooms and its kind of hard to identify these things using google. I'm new to all of this but it very exciting and fun.

Also inrolled margin on cap ...a lack of such is one of the defining traits for G. liquiritiae

I checked out the thread here on Gymnopilus Luteofolius and the pictures really do look like what I have. Wow! I'm super stoked.

What if the dead chunk of tree they are growing out of is a Bois-d'arc (horse apple) tree? I think it might be Bois-d'arc and not oak, does that make a difference?
