If I give you this choice, which do you choose?

A. You flip a coin, if it lands on head you get 100$, if it lands on tails you get nothing
B. You get 40$ now
Which do you pick?

Definitely the $40 now. Though I guess my answer might be different if the amounts were much higher.

Option A is effectively a $50 value in a sense: if you could keep doing it repeatedly, you'd average out to $50 per time. Presumably it's only a one time shot though, and there's a substantial chance you'll get nothing. Option B is a $40 value, not a huge value difference and there is no chance of getting nothing. A obviously is better in the long term if you can do it repeatedly, but for a one-time shot I'd go with B. If the B amount was a lot less then I would go with the gamble.

I'll go for B, even though I have spent a buck to win a billion in the Powerball lottery.
40 bucks guaranteed beats 50% chance on $100 for me.
Likewise:
40,000 bucks guaranteed beats 50% chance on $100,000 for me.
How about you?

To me $40 equals substantial money. I'm not going to risk certain substantial money for half a chance of a somewhat more substantial sum.
50% is a huge risk.

You said if 'I' flip a coin. Fuck yeah, you wanna give me $100 then go for it.
For those that don't know, if you practice enough you can get that coin to land however you want it to.
So give me all your money.

Considering I'm starting out with nothing anyways, I'd go for the $100 flip. I don't need $40 that badly but a free $100 would be pretty nice. Worth the shot for me.

Its a mental thing.
Whats a bigger thing for you?
YAY! I got $40! YAY! I got $100! ACK! I had $40 and lost it all!
To me turning a 40 into a 100 is a smaller high than losing a 40 on a gamble is a low.

This question could be worded in another way. Someone gives you $40 and then asks if you want to wager that $40 on a 50:50 shot to win $100. If you are not a gambler, then you don't gamble and keep the $40. If you are a gambler, then you are essentially getting $10 more to risk.
I think it comes down to whether or not you can afford to risk $40. The bet is a good one and you should take it unless you really need the $40.

That's how I feel. If I did get $40 I'd probably blow it on food. If I got $100 I'd probably use it for rent.
