What kind of wood are they growing on? Why is Gymnopilus thiersii or aeruginosus not a possibility?

If the pictured wood is where they were found, that's pine.

And to be clear, I should have said "textbook gyms" ...personally I've found trying to definitively id gym species to often be an exercise in futility and admittedly I don't see anything that would rule out thiersii or aeruginosis.

I absolutely agree and that's why I try to use terms like Gymnopilus Aeruginosus-luteofolius clade as a catch-all when defining species that look like this.

The context (flesh) color of aeruginosus is said to be yellowish and a cap with black scales, luteofolius is supposedly more purple with no green cap staining and I think thiersii doesn't have a fibrillose veil or an evanescent zone.

I think Gymnopilus aeruginosus only shows black scales in maturity.

Maynard- you're right it could be one of the other types of active Gymnopilus. I've found them in wood chips in the cities and they've been identified as Luteofolius by Alan. This was a surprise find in a monterey pine forest. Not used to finding active mushrooms far from cities and towns.
