Stealthy mushroom

I've got several casings going right now, and many of them are riddled with pins. :smile2:
However, a few have no pins yet. One of these has hardly any mycelium on the top layer, and it's showing no signs of growth. Or so I thought. Just now I noticed a fairly large pin/mushroom growing from the side of the casing, it's stem reaching all the way down to the substrate. I'm not sure what's going on here, but I'm happy that this casing is in fact fruiting.
Has this happened to anyone? Will pins form at the casing layer later or is something weird happening?

are the casings all in the same condition? it sounds like the one growing from the side is growing from a casing with too little moisture. If you can tell that the stem of the mushroom goes down to the substrate then the casing is pulling away from the side of the tray is it not? there seems to be a moisture problem in the casing and having it pull away, esp as far as yours sounds to be, is a definite contam risk. if this describes your casing, hydrate that shit and maybe patch the sides with sterile casing mix.

Well, that's a pretty good assumption, however the fact is I'm using cheap disposable bread pans for the casings and they bend easilly. I've been pretty good about reforming them to match the casings, but this one in particular has a slight gap that I never noticed until a little mushroom popped it's head through.
