So my brother in Romania started to grow this type of mushroom and after investing $20,000, his first production of over 500LBS of mushrooms came out with an unknown disease so he has to throw everything away. Pic attached. Where should I aks the question if anyone in the US or anyone else knows what this disease is and how to treat it??? Thanks!

I wouldn't jump the gun and throw it all away. Does it smell good? Drake nailed it, probabbly too much misting or not enough time between misting, or too much RH. Make sure your caps dry off any surface moisture between misting. With straw logs you want around 75-80% RH misting 3-5 times a day depending on temps and FAE, give or take. Is that a vermiculite bed? Your growing 500 lbs in a chamber with a vermiculite bed?

Multiple strains with the same condition. Different bags and different spawn. Chances are environment, as said by both Drake and Gr0wer.
I have never seen this oddity either.

Seems crazy to just assume it's an unknown disease and just pitch it all right off the hop. Maybe it's not saleable but I wouldn't assume contamination based off those pics. I ain't much of a gourmet grower, just a simple hobbiest, but I'm inclined to agree with drake and Gr0wer that at worst it's some bacteria.

Thanks all for your responses. I am not very familiar with mushrooms growing - I am trying to help my brother who doesnt speak very well English. So, most of these answers are kind of advanced for me. What misting means??? How often you do misting? I assume misting in this context means irigation??? My brother says he has some kind of fog system, and it's non stop, he doesnt turn it off... Would that be an issue?

That does sound like you are putting too much water in the air.
Hygrometer:

80-90% Rh (Humidity).

Yes misting is irrigation in the air. You do not want to mist your mushrooms non stop. For oyster mushrooms you can mist heavily when they are small but closer to harvest you only want to mist the caps every hour or two, allowing the caps to lose there surface moisture.

When you're foggers are undersized it makes sense to fog constantly but that's an unfortunate position to be in.

would definitely just make a slide and put it on a microscope to find out really quickly what was going on.
any 20,000 dollar farm should have a microscope and at least some sort of QA

I would say that it could be rosecomb. Could be from a number of causes, but mine was caused by disinfectant fumes. Basically I used bleach on a fruiting chamber, and did not get it washed off enough before putting my blocks in.

I have a pretty good idea that is spores landing on the caps and starting to grow. Usually caused by too much moisture. - Look at the pattern - just like a spore print!
Reduce the humidity gradually, if you get it right quality will improve and so will shelf life.

Great theory! But in the second picture, I don't think it would work. Maybe a combo of things?

You are right but we can't see what is just above that mushroom - also I do have experience of this happening. It seemed to be a particular moisture point, as usually the spores just go brown as they rot on the mushroom surface if it is very wet. I think it was high temp related - so many challenges I can't remember them all! I believe from a vague memory Stamets may even have mentioned it.

Thanks for your reply. My brother does have a microscope and he said he only said a mass of cells on the caps... where the striations are... What would that be??? Also - what fog system everyone use?

Like the others have said the spores could be getting on the tops(caps) and being too humid causing problems
It's better than seeing mold or bacteria
