Oats or WBS? It's been a few years..
    #23853840 - 11/21/16 10:27 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Not really sure if I should try whole oats or wild bird seed. I'd probably follow Franks wbs tek loosely (i'd rinse and pour floaters but not worry about random debris), or van der griegens Oat tek.

Suggestions? Pros? Cons?

It's been a few years since I do any myco cultivation. I don't readily have rye available. I plan to G2G, my focus is bulk for a while.

starting up after ten years ive stuck with wbs. rye/oats are not easy to come by.

i basiclly do franks/docs/fooman core wbs but i do not simmer. just soak for 24hrs
after heavy rinsing. adding gypsum is good too! of course if you are going bulk
read up on pastys easy agar(if you never done)
doing bulk without agar is risky as hell.

I guess you'll get more inoculation points with WBS..

And choose whatever is cheaper/easier to get.

Both WBS and oats seem to have good results, and if your going with oats makes sure they're the ones that come with the hulls on the grain.

Found this thread by just searching oats vs WBS https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/23204285

The search engine is really useful. :super:

I don't understand why people call WBS easier than bigger grain like oats, rye or wheat.
I tried WBS a few years ago maybe it was a bad first try but it was a mess in my kitchen. Much harder for me to get the right water content.

How I use Oats/Rye/Wheat:
- Cover with hot water. Soak for about 8 hours.
- Boiling 10-15 minutes
- Drain
- Placing on a big surface until it feels dry to the touch.
- Loading jars/bags
- PC for 90-120 min

That's the only pro of WBS IMO.
Some WBS lovers can try to change my mind. But for now I don't see any advantages besides the inoculation point argument.

Agreed, its much easier to prepare oats/bigger grains.

I use to prepare rye like how RR use to, and it was so easy and not messy like WBS.

But i use WBS simply cus its readily available and is much cheaper for the amount that i'm getting.

OK. Another argument. It is not cheaper where i life so it does not make it more attractive to me. But it might be a good point for people who can get it cheap.

Whole oats rule, wbs smells funny.  This oat prep method (#1)takes the least amount of babysitting

Living in the Midwest, whole oats are much easier to come by for me in large bulk bags. Usually about half as much as the same amount of WBS.

If you can find a mono grain cheaper then wbs. Go for any mono grain. All grains just soaking is best starting point. Oats have silently less nute profile then wbs. If making grain water lc or agar then wbs looks prettier to me

I like WBS masters g2g to oats. The WBS goes a little farther when g2ging and the oats seem to have a really good recovery time as well as better moisture retention. Both can be found for about $0.20-$0.25/lb and can both be prepped easily with no soak methods (Fooman and van der griegens teks)

So im feeling convinced to go with oats.

I'll be looking into agar. For now my plan is to make 10x half pint spawn jars (with oats). I plan to inoculate with 1cc each. I'll be using those spawn jars to create liquid culture or larger spawn jars to cycle. Going with agar may change all of that.

If you don't do agar first...spores are dirty that is why you should  just do agar first.  And also your oats won't be sitting around for 10-15 days naked of no myc if you knock with agar.

You should prefer grain to grain with your colonized jars.
LC is a great thing IMO but you need a very good sterile technique.

So I see everyone, everywhere say to presoak oats for 24 hours... I found this to be completely unnecessary. This is what I did when I first started. Now I just measure out my oats, toss him in the pot, fill it with water, and bring it to a hard boil (on high heat). Then I turn the heat off and let it sit in the pot for 40 minutes. Strain, dry, and jar and I've had amazing success. I went from maybe 10 to 20% success rate to 99.
