Pasteurize Vermiculite

Hey everyone. So I'm back at my 2nd attempt of a monotub now after my last one was a bit of a failure. It only yielded about 10 pieces of fruit and upon inspection, the mycelium... seemed pretty much non existent in my substrate. Which was straw.
I had bought a kit online with an already colonized grain spawn. They're sending me a free replacement so this time I want to make sure it yields BIG.
I've been doing some reading. Straw apparently isn't a great substrate? Vermiculite however is? Problem is, I don't have a pressure cooker or access to one and I really have no idea what Vermiculite is.
How can I pasteurize this vermiculite substrate? Can I boil it? Can I buy manure from a garden store?

Verm is NOT a substrate. Verm is added to substrate to hold moisture for the fruits to use. Read up on coir substrate or CVG as you will see it called here. I personally like the Damion5050 bucket tek. A quick search will get you on the right track. Also, kits SUCK. Buy some spores, learn PF tek and if you want to move up get a pressure cooker and do some bulk tubs, you will be much more satisfied and save a ton of money. Good luck Dick

So the verm is added to hold moisture, to reduce the need to mist, to reduce chances of contam?
I do plan on making my own spawns. The reason I bought this kit was really just to start learning about growing.
I'll search up the Coir substrate. Thank you!

Sounds like you have quite a bit of reading to do.... I'd recommend the "getting started" section. To answer your question, verm is to provide the fruits water for devolopment. Misting is to cause surface evaporation which is a major pinning trigger, two separate things. Get reading. Dick

Also man, I'm curious, where have you read that straw is a bad substrate? It is an awesome substrate actually, arguably the best, mycelium loves it. Is it recommended for beginners? Maybe not.

Kits don't suck but they're just not very fun... My hobby got kickstarted by a kit because I was fascinated by the growth of the mushrooms. In my country you can buy colonised mycelium, so all I had to do was put it in a bag and mist it. I got a few ounces of that kit I bought for 30 bucks... A spore print alone would've been 10-15, but with the kit I made dozens of prints... Pretty economical if you have no materials to start PF tek. I don't understand the hate too much, a kit can really help kickstart someone to get into this hobby. I never would've started PF tek if it wasn't for that kit. It's of course way more satisfying to do everything yourself and see your own results, but kits can sometimes make sense.

What did the kit TEACH you though, really? Sure, it's cool to watch, and you are pretty well guaranteed at least some sort of harvest but it's like the old saying "Give a man a fish and he will eat that day, teach a man to fish and he will eat for life. Don't take me rude here, but all you have to do, as you stated is bag it and mist it. For thirty bucks you can build a SGFC, jars and get a syringe. I think the reason kits are looked down upon here is not that they do not work, it is that the center of discussion here is cultivation and technique. Enjoy the day. Dick

Nothing, and I never implied it did. It just fascinated me enough to want to start with this new hobby. If it wasn't available I would never have started. The barrier of entry was too high for me to want to try PF tek. I thought it was destined to fail.

100% agreed.

Questionable. I think I spend more to start PF tek. And I was prepared to spend that because I saw how easy it was to cultivate cubes.

All I'm saying is that, if it wasn't for that kit I would never have started growing mushrooms.

I totally agree, but there is a virtue to kits for some.
I order those ezgrow kits from some obscure smartshop in amsterdam, they come already colonized and days from fruiting. They are particularly useful for starting tubs or colonizing pf tek jars.
Just my input

What would you buy a kit to make pf tek jars? That makes NO sense man. I could maybe understand tubs. But of jars? How and why, I am honestly curious.

I live in Europe and in Germany - of course - magic mushrooms are forbidden, so I have to go to the netherlands (I live near the border) to get some. I could buy a sporeprint for 10 Euro or buy a Grow Box for 20 Euro, which gives me about 20 spore prints and about 20g of dry mushrooms.
So I think the decision is obvious.
I can understand the argumentation, that grow kits for "daily" supply are a waste of money, but if you want to get spore prints or spore syringes anyway, it's better to go for a small grow box, which will give you what you need plus some mushrooms extra

Okay but, people in the rest of the world who don't have access to live mycelium kits are dealing with the even bigger wastes of money than you. So when you talk about kits positively at all, it's still going to lead to us dealing with more fucking kits down the line. We don't like troubleshooting kits because the only advice we can give is "do it yourself".

I totally agree. Didn't mean it in general, just wanted to state my situtation here in mid europe
As it is too general to say "Kits are great" it's too general to say "Kit's are bad for everybody everywhere"
