From what ive read the sterile water puts the culture in suspended animation of sorts. Especiallly with a layer of mineral oil on top of the water. So no refrigeration is needed for years. I ran into a few of my water cultures to contaminate so now i use them as a last resort backup and run the small half pint jars with about an inch of agar and toothpicks as my go to masters. Also, always have multiple masters especially if your a production grower like me. I have 3 jars of each and 3 water cultures of each of my main strains.

Thanks for the response.. I was hoping to store everything in water in small tubes but if you save the thick agar jars are better I'll go with that and have the water as back up..

I need to find some small jars that I can fit in a lunchbag in my fridge.. Would baby food jars work? Storing 10 half pints will take up to much space in the fridge.. Thinking of something smaller until I get my mini fridge

Anything that can contain fluids and can be made to be sterile, in working order.

How about anaerobic storage in sterile distilled water?

Dram vials of mycelium water may keep for several years at room temperature. I'm refining a syringe-based method based on this tek.

The literature describing this method focuses on yeasts and pathogens, but it seems reliable for gourmet mushrooms too.

Would you guys recommend storing in vacutainers? Or would it be better using screw top test tubes?
Would you pc the vacutainers with water in them? Or would it be better to LC them in a jar and use sterile water from a syringe to fill them when doing the agar to vacutainer transfer?

If anyone can throw a like up of good test tubes that would be great

Where in the video does he mention the size of the test tubes? Where in the video does he mention vacutainers?

I have adopted this method and have all my species under steril h2o ive yet to do any transfers (grower have you noticed contamination also being sort of in suspended cultivation due to lac of o2 and nutrients?)or will the contams just take over completly?

Found this great write up that shows how to use various containers including vacutainers..

If anyone is interested 15ml centrifuge tube are like $15 for 100
Or if you want some fat boys you can get the 50ml tubes..

I'll be getting both. I'll use the 15ml for water storage and 50ml for the thick agar like in Gr0wers video

I wouldn't know from personal experience, but the Care and Handling of Cultures write-up by Penn state says to never put cultures in a fridge that doesn't have fresh air circulation (i.e., anaerobic storage).
Is it possible that in an aerobic fridge with proper humidity a culture would last longer? Culture banks obviously use other freezing and cooling techniques to store cultures for decades, so is anaerobic refrigeration the 'best case scenario' since dehydration is the main problem for the home cultivator?
