Second grow - BRF cakes in plastic containers
    #23852236 - 11/20/16 05:39 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey all,

This is my second attempt at growing Cubensis, so I thought I'd post up a log to get some tips and to make sure I'm heading in the right direction. Thank you in advance for your assistance and valuable knowledge!

The goal here is maximum yield with the equipment I have.

Day 1: 14th Nov

Made BRF mixture 1:1:1/2 as per my memory of a tek, using take-away containers instead of glass jars to maximise area and aid in sterilisation, as I've had a lot of trouble with the glass jars (no pressure cooker).

I've also been using methylated spirits as a disinfectant, seems to work in my old stale house in a valley.

Inoculated into each corner using a sterilised plastic needle plunger (minus the metal needle), so just the plastic plunger goes all the way into the substrate, removed, covered with dry verm, plunger disinfected, repeated.

Placed container behind fridge where it's nice and warm.

Day 7: 21st Nov

Growth is good, no contams, covered 1/2 the holes (too much air exchange).

Updated Day 7:
Made a 2nd container which has a thinner substrate and thicker verm barrier.

It would probably be best to cover all holes with MP tape.
It's been a while but isn't brf mix 2:1:1 verm:brf:water?

I've read that covering the holes isn't necessary and that the extra air aids the colonisation.

The holes are for gas exchange and do aid colonisation

 I've read that you're also supposed to colonize in 1/2 pints.
You have enough holes in that thing that MP tape will still allow plenty of FAE

Ok, thank you, how about I tape up half of the un-taped holes?

Don't worry about it leave them alone or you'll disturbe the dry verm and potentially let in shit

Hrm... I guess it has been 7 days already and there's not enough verm...

How about I leave those holes un-taped and hope that there's enough iron to keep it going?

Actually I did drop it once and disturbed the dry verm.. But yea, that happened..

I'd personally tape them all up to minimize potential contams.
Tbh I don't have much faith in this grow
I have a feeling those holes are letting in way too many contams
I don't think the verm layer will stand a chance

Thanks, you might be right, but I'm an optimist. However, do you think this because of the lack of verm and so water, as well as too many holes?

This grow was contaminated - looks like the spore water was the culprit.

It's definitely airborne contams that got to it

Probably part of it... But we use the metal point on the needles because we can flame them (sterilize) using plastic only allows you to sanitize, which is basically useless for inoculation...
