A Tragedy for Music Lovers Everywhere - <3 for What.cd 3

"The end of What is the end of the most complete musical database ever created by humanity."
Just wanted to give a shout here with respect and gratitude, as it was a Shroomery member who gifted to me my invite so many years ago. What.cd was there for me when the record stores closed and the online music sales and streaming services lacked the depth within their catalogues that they so promised to behold. Analogous to Wikipedia, a music collection of all genres and formats, painstakingly curated for years and bigger than any collection I have ever witnessed anywhere, appears to have been lost. Whether or not you were a member of this particular community, the greater community of music lovers everywhere will ultimately suffer the loss of so many obscure pieces of genius that were reborn and made available through this service.

What.cd is gone: A Eulogy for the Greatest Music Collection in the World

That was such a wonderful source for music.
Soulseek is really really good. I can't believe it's still running after all these years.

Soulseek is sweet because a lot of users will just give you full access to their hard drive and you can just browse all their files. You find crazy ass shit on it all the time you weren't looking for music wise.

I'd heard of Soulseek but never used it. I am generally more of a "I want this particular piece of obscurity in a particular format" type of mindset. On the other hand, I am browsing Soulseek now and I can see that it might offer a rather brilliant experience for music explorers, thanks for the rec!

Soulseek is very specific. You want flac. you got it. You don't want a song on an album, it's gone. It shows you all the lengths of the tracks so you can compare it to amazon and make sure it's a good quality. You can be truly meticulous with that program. Since it's P2P you can always refresh searches and new people get online with stuff, you just have to share to download.
I set my share folder to my music folder, than on settings I click "Only allow users on my list to access my files" so your share folder isnt getting bombarded all the time, and any time you download an album right click the user you are downloading from and select "Add to list". If the person you try to download from doesnt see a share folder accessible, they will ban you from downloading from them.

Yeah when I was in college they were experimenting with file sharing and we had this thing called i2hub, which was made by a file sharing prodigy there named Wayne Chang, and you could poke around a significant portion of student's computers. Just kinda browse around their hard drive and see what they were into. Always good for kicks.

Oh no, what.cd is gone? It was on my list of sites to sign up for for a long time, now I regret I never did. It would have been perfect for my obscure tastes.

end of an era....
I lost my what CD membership a few months back so I haven't reaped the benefits of that incredible database in a while, but it really is sad to see it go. That site was definitely one of the amazing collaborative achievements of humanity

Waffles(.ch) should be back up soon, am hoping it sees a surge in uploads and becomes as massive as What.cd soon.

I was always resistant to trying to find a membership for it figuring it was like any other torrenting site (maybe a little more filled out with music but nothing you couldn't track down elsewhere easy enough). If it really was the wikipedia of music, I kinda regret it now. There are a number of bands I've tried to find albums for and can't (at least none that are seeded) and others that took me a lot of digging to find.

With my face against the floor I can’t see who knocked me out of the way. I don’t want to get back up but I have to so it might as well be today. Nothing appeals to me no one feels like me, I’m too busy being calm to disappear. I’m in no shape to be alone contrary to the shit that you might hear. You can't wake up, this is not a dream. You're part of a machine, you are not a human being With your face all made up, living on a screen. Low on self esteem, so you run on gasoline
