Trump Shock Wave Hits Legal Marijuana Advocates * 3
    #23850376 - 11/20/16 02:46 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

"Advocates for drug policy reform have blasted Trump for selecting Sessions.

“Donald Trump’s decision heralds a return to the worst days of the drug war,” said Bill Piper, senior director of national affairs at Drug Policy Alliance, a drug policy reform group.

“Jeff Sessions is a drug war dinosaur, which is the last thing the nation needs now,” said Ethan Nadelmann, DPA’s executive director. “Those who counted on Donald Trump’s reassurance that marijuana reforms ‘should be a state issue’ will be sorely disappointed.”

Trump has said he would respect states’ rights on the issue, but Sessions’ track record of opposing marijuana reform is deeply troubling to people who favor progressive drug laws.

During a Senate hearing earlier this year, Sessions spoke out against marijuana and urged the federal government to send the message to the public that “good people don’t smoke marijuana.” He went on to say that “we need grown-ups in Washington to say marijuana is not the kind of thing that ought to be legalized” and blasted Obama’s stance on the issue. He called the legalization of marijuana “a mistake” last year.

In 1986, when Sessions had been nominated to be a federal judge, a former assistant U.S. attorney accused him of saying that he thought the Ku Klux Klan was acceptable until he found out members smoked marijuana. Sessions allegedly made the statement in connection with the prosecution of a Klan member who had hanged a black man."

Banning all marijuana sales (in practicality even though it already is officially) and cracking down on it will make Oregon/WA/and Cali and who knows who else literally secede.

Once the man does something then react..

No one is going to stand for heavy handed federal treatment of what the country by and large has determined as beneficial medical treatment for the sick and a relatively harmless recreational norm compared to alcohol.

On the main issues, he's in line with what trump has vocalized :
> Anti-amnesty
> He's anti national debt
> He's anti corporatism
> In Alabama, Jeff Sessions Desegregated Schools and Got the Death Penalty for KKK Murderer

So, on the main issues, he's in the green. He's not a racist as the dumbass media would portray him as. He is not a KK supporter as he got the death penalty for the head of the KKK at the time for a murder against a black man.

He might have made some flippant comments about weed that the jackass media as they have been doing for years has taken out of context. If he attempts to roll back the progress we made on drugs in this country, I'm sure people wont stand for that.

So, everyone get your panties out of a bunch and stop spreading this silly ass nonsense perpetuated by false news organizations like Huffington post.

No one is buying these silly ass narratives anymore. Its old and played out and the country is moving on from it.  Judge a man by his actions not his words.

Kind of how everyone warned of the colossal fuckup that was coming under Obama only to have to sit through (not 4 years) but 8 years of hot garbage...

The worst was, when his actions reflected quite clearly how he was fucking the country up yet no one acted on it and even defended it.

What is being said here is that the the narrative from huffingtonpost as well as many other trash bin news organization is false as it has been for much of this election and long before it. When the man acts you can judge him on his actions. He's going to be in office as is Trump. His presidency was established through democratic vote. What was the clown ass narrative at Huffingtonpost during this time? That he had n chance.. A blatant lie.

So, I should somehow believe this nonsense that I can fact check in under 2 minutes of googling? I'm supposed to be shocked that a hardline prosecutor of justice from Alabama made some flippant comment about weed as if I never make flippant comments sometimes?
As if I've never used the N word before as a joke? No man, fuck that....

That's that stupid pc sh*t that is heading out the window that should have never got cemented in this country. You judge a man by his actions not his words. Somehow in this orgy of idiocy, people were convinced to behave otherwise. So, people sat around judging trump based on some truthful shit that all women and men know is a reality that was said in a locker room....

So, sessions made some colorful commentary about the KKK after he literally got the death penalty for one of their leaders... Big fuckn whoop man. His actions speak louder than some misinterpreted sound bite.

If he goes after Marijuana, how about people protest about that? Take action. Unify...

Something of actual value and demonstrated worth to the American public. Don't be bitches about it and sit at home apathetically melting into your sofa like people did while watching John Stewart/Colbert report as this country drifted into shit for 8 years. Get off your sorry ass and have your voice heard about injustice.

I have no doubt people will so there is no shockwave.

Hypocrites who say flippant shit on a regular basis that could equally get thrown out of context need to sit their asses down. The age of PC bullshit and judging people on their comments is over.

The golden age of the 90's and early 2000's is making a roaring comeback so you best man the fuck up snowflakes

weed, I certainly recall a bunch of liberals saying that obama would legalize weed
EVEN AFTER obama said he had no intention to put in any focus on legalization

He said weed laws "should be left to a state level" i believe the quote was, which to me, sounds like "keep it legal where its already legal".

It's just wait and see at this point. The States who have legalized recreational or medical in the last election will move forward with the legislation on the timeline they had planned. I believe for MA that means cannabis is official legal for personal use and purchase as of December 15th. I think there may also be some language in the legislation for home grows as well but I haven't looked too far into, just repeating what some dude from Worcester told me last weekend!

Trump has stated that he will let that remain a State issue, so we will really just have to wait and see what happens.

"good people don't smoke marijuana"

Ya ya damn hippies drink alcohol and beat your wife instead like a good God fearing American.

I can't believe people who are in the public eye and are in positions of power all across our vast nation say such stupid ass shit. Older shroomery members clue me in.

I wouldn't worry too much. It's pretty apparent weed is not a big deal. They can argue it all they want but more states are turning this election cycle was a big win for pot. Public opinion is shifting legal pot isn't going anywhere. At the end of the day they still answer to the people. I rarely smoke pot anymore but don't really care if people do. Hell most of my good friends are stoners

Actually I can't really think of anyone I know that hasn't tried pot or has any negative views on it. It just isn't for some people as I noticed myself. Makes me lazy. But how sheltered are some people in the bubbles that they meet a Klan member and equate him smoking weed to everyone that smokes weed is terrible. :wtf:

Tell that to the people who spent decades in prison over it. It's still federally illegal. The law could easily be enforced by executive order. The heads of any branch of federal law enforcement can make a difference. Our gains could be wiped out very quickly. Don't take your freedom for granted.

I don't want death on liberals. I live in a liberal state. My sister is gay and her gf is her life partner. No objections.

But crying and handing out cocoa and blankets while it's raining out. That's pretty ridiculously funny. Seriously?

She goes to a very liberal school in Wisconsin. "people are walking around crying and afraid for there lives"

I'm Democrat in the sense that I don't really care what color your skin is or who hops in who's bed for however much money. Or which profit you pray to. We'll I don't think that's a Democrat trait it's a decent human being trait.

We've been debating back and forth as I am a Republican. As you work for what you have and eat what you can kill. That's how Alaska raised me. But I also do benefit from Washington's socialism and it makes me soft.

But last time I did the math from my Paystubs I was paying 30% tax plus 9% sales tax on everything I buy. 20% plus a 3 dollar bottle tax if you buy hard alcohol.

Honestly I think the Democrats could have picked a random bum off the street and would have won over Donald trump. Or hell just a regular ol sandwich.

They've been friends for years trump and the Clinton's. I also read him and Bill used to go on trips with their friend that was a known young girl sex trafficer.

Which I don't really understand shit a girl is peaking physically well at 16. But I draw the line at 18. Even then unless they're little hos I prefer older women.

They come with a resume and know how to work a dick. Maybe it's a power thing? Well owning a billion dollar company that spans the globe. Being president is pretty cool but my wife is kind of a bitch.

The blow job heard round the world and women are acting like that is what they would like to be first female president. He got caught in front of the WORLD and she didn't end it immediately she folded. If that isn't what feminists have been fighting for years I don't understand what is.

I know I make decisions I regret before a solid release. All the ratchet girls can attest to that. Alright I'm hungry and what was that? Russia Bah give me the file.

We know what the AG he nominated thinks about legalization, and what he did when he was a prosecutor. He's the one that will make the decision regarding what to do about the legal states.

I certainly am not, personally I don't think either candidate would have made any difference. They are both puppets probably serving the same masters.

No one but puppets makes it that far in politics and has any chance of being elected president it seems. The election is just a giant show to divide the general public.

If people stopped bitching about the politicians they don't support while blindly following the ones they do and actually tried to make a difference we could have long ago moved past 2 party politics as it is clear this system doesn't work and is way too easy to corrupt/ buy out. Instead every 4 years they get everyone all riled up and divided until most people have settled back down into complacency.

"make the decision regarding what to do about the legal states"

There's no debate, therefore there's no decision. If you have evidence to the contrary, please share.

I didn't system Trump will be pro weed. I'm just reminding everyone that hillary is explicitly anti weed. in a worst case scenario Trump will do exactly the same thing Hillary promised to do - oppose legalization.  but with him we don't know for sure yet, with Hillary we do.

> In Alabama, Jeff Sessions Desegregated Schools and Got the Death Penalty for KKK Murderer

(CNN)As the US attorney in Mobile, Alabama, Jeff Sessions was talking over a case one day in the 1980s with two fellow prosecutors.

It had to do with a young black man who had been kidnapped and brutally murdered by two members of the Ku Klux Klan.

The Klansmen, Henry Hayes and Tiger Knowles, slit the victim's throat and hung his body from a tree.
They carried out the attack in retribution for a jury acquitting a black man in the slaying of a white police officer.

As Sessions learned that some members of the Klan had smoked marijuana on the evening of the slaying, he said aloud that he thought the KKK was: "OK until I found out they smoked pot."
Sessions insists he was joking. But the damage was done.
....
Thomas Figures, an assistant US Attorney who worked under Sessions in Mobile, testified that he was present when Sessions made the remark and said he did not regard it as a joke.

Figures, who was African-American and passed away last year, also told committee members that Sessions had called him "boy" on several occasions and once cautioned him to "be careful what you say to white folks" after Figures had spoken harshly to a secretary who was white.

Another federal prosecutor, J. Gerald Hebert, testified that Sessions had called the ACLU and NAACP "un-American" and "communist-inspired." According to Hebert, Sessions said the two groups "forced civil rights down the throats of people."
....
Hebert, the Justice Department prosecutor who testified about Sessions alleged comments about the NAACP and ACLU, said he has had no contact with his former colleague since the hearing three decades ago. But has followed his career through his public comments and votes in the Senate. He said he noticed "a pattern" of behavior that has concerned him, including voting against the nomination of several high profile appointees who were non-white.

All things considered, Hebert, said, he found it a frightening prospect that Sessions would be appointed attorney general. "It's a collection of things from over the years. I think it's frightening for people who believe in fairness and equality for him to be running the Justice Department."

Sessions is obviously very against Marijuana.

What he will do if and when he gets in remains to be seen.

During his campaign, Donald Trump repeatedly vowed to leave the question of marijuana prohibition “to the states.” And any federal crackdown would likely inspire heavy backlash, both from “green state” voters and from the burgeoning legal mairjuana industry.
...
During Senate confirmation hearings for current attorney general Loretta Lynch, Sessions suggested that he viewed opposition to state-level legalization as a core responsibility of America’s top prosecutor.

“I hope that you will cease to be silent, because if the law-enforcement officers don’t do this, I don’t know who will,” Sessions said. “And in the past, attorneys general and other government officials have spoken out and I think kept bad decisions from being made.”

In a Senate hearing on the federal response to state-level cannabis laws, Sessions called on the government to foster the “knowledge that this drug is dangerous, you cannot play with it, it is not funny, it’s not something to laugh about … good people don’t smoke marijuana.”
....
Sessions has further suggested that Barack Obama’s confession of past marijuana use contributed to the increase in rates of drug overdose in the United States, and pined for the days when “[t]he federal government led the way with tough sentencing, eliminating parole, targeting dangerous drugs in effective ways, and states and local governments followed.”

The likely next attorney general’s passion for federal leadership on marijuana prohibition stands in marked contrast to his belief that the Voting Rights Act intrudes on states’ rights.

But perhaps Sessions simply believes that some policies are so central to who we are as a country, they supersede state sovereignty — and that jailing people for smoking weed is one of those policies, while guaranteeing African-Americans access to the ballot is not.

Obama said multiple times he was going to let states who decriminalized pot handle matters themselves and he wouldn't be raiding any more dispensaries.

And Feds kept raiding legal dispensary after legal dispensary. Over and fucking over.

We'll see what he actually does. The public isn't going to put up with any more of that fucking Reefer Madness fucking bullshit.

As far as I can tell he has not voted on any marijuana legislation in the senate. He has voted on some other drug related issues.

Voted YES on increasing penalties for drug offenses.

Vote to increase penalties on certain drug-related crimes. The amendment would specifically target the manufacturing or trafficking of amphetamines & methamphetamines and possession of powder cocaine, and set stronger penalties for dealing drugs
http://senate.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Jeff_Sessions_Drugs.htm#1999-360

Voted YES on more penalties for gun & drug violations.

The Hatch amdt would increase mandatory penalties for the illegal transfer or use of firearms, fund additional drug case prosecutors, and require background check on purchasers at gun shows. [A YES vote supports stricter penalties].
Status: Amdt Agreed to Y)48; N)47; NV)5

http://senate.ontheissues.org/Domestic/Jeff_Sessions_Gun_Control.htm#1999-118

Those votes were both a long ass time ago though, and neither are really relevant to the Marijuana question. All I could find.

He said that the US Attorney General should not accept state level legalization of Marijuana -- AS A CORE RESPONSIBILITY.

Couldn't get any worse than that.

Whether he would do what he says he believes - or whether he would be allowed by Trump to do it remains to be seen.

Lol, they could be looking at very serious shit if they crack down on the west coast. How out of touch they are with the population is quite ridiculous. People here would take up arms to protect their cannabis in an instant. I'm not necessarily one of them, but the cannabis industry over here is filled with well armed crazy rich paranoid people.

Would be crazy to see the the continuation of this failed drug war cause a second civil war... I hope it doesn't come to that but we certainly need some change.

Guns and war is definitely not the way to go. It'd just make alot of heroin and alcohol addicts -- just what the corporate guys want. And it would give the gov. a reason to bring in martial law.

Definitely the wrong way to go - besides being against what Marijuana is all about.

but clearly he's such a danger to marijuana users because the media told them that

he's abstained from voting on any marijuana bills to avoid isolating his
constituency as well as to avoid losing potential voters, he did exactly what
obama did in the senate. he voted present on those bills, only obama ran for
the senate under the auspices that he would vote for legalization

couldnt it get any worse?

obamas administration said after being him being inaugurated that they wouldnt
go after any dispensaries as long as they complied with state and federal laws,
obama's administration was responsible for more than twice the number of raids
on medical marijuana dispensaries as were done under the bush administration...

why?

because on a federal level marijuana is illegal, the USAG is a federal law
enforcement officer, with the obama administration relaxing enforcement on
immigration laws and only claiming to relax it on federal drug laws while
actually ramping it up, dont you think that is a danger as well. the obama
administration has decided to pick and choose what laws they'll enforce and
while the drug laws not being enforced is a great thing, it's not what happened
we were instead misled about it while they went full bore on enforcing those laws

Let's hope that Sessions is prevented from doing what he says should be a core responsibility of the AG, and that Trump continues to hold to his statements in favor of state's rights regarding Marijuana legalization, and of being in favor of medical Marijuana.

in 2008 all the liberals were claiming obama would legalize marijuana, in 2012 they said he'd do it in his second term

maybe people need to stop listening to liberals

In 2013, Obama's policy on Marijuana was to respect states rights.

Trump, on the other hand, is looking to appoint someone who specifically DOESN'T respect states rights for Marijuana.

In a speech on the Senate floor earlier this year, Sessions criticized President Barack Obama for not being tough enough on marijuana, saying the U.S. could be at the beginning of “another surge in drug use like we saw in the ’60s and ’70s.”
http://www.mcclatchydc.com/article115643838.html#storylink=cpy

As I said before - hopefully Trump will hold to what he said about states rights.

"Jubilation over marijuana's ballot wins was quickly tempered by the uncertain future marijuana faces under a Trump Justice Department. “The prospect of Donald Trump as our next president concerns me deeply,” Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance, said in a statement. “His most likely appointees to senior law enforcement positions — Rudy Giuliani and Chris Christie — are no friends of marijuana reform, nor is his vice president.”

Regardless of what happens at the state level, marijuana remains illegal for all uses under federal law. The Obama administration has officially adopted a policy of noninterference with state marijuana laws, as outlined in a 2013 memo by then-Deputy Attorney General James Cole.

In the Cole memo, the Justice Department acknowledged the reality that most drug enforcement is carried out by state and local — not federal — authorities. The department's position has been that as long as state legalization efforts didn't threaten certain federal priorities — like keeping marijuana out of the hands of minors, preventing driving while under the influence of drugs and keeping marijuana grow operations out of federal lands — it would exercise “prosecutorial discretion” and direct its limited law enforcement resources to other drug priorities, such as dealing with the opiate epidemic.
....
John Hudak, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who studies marijuana policy, said this memo was instrumental in allowing Colorado and Washington to set up their recreational marijuana markets. “A lot of people forget that [recreational marijuana markets in] Colorado and Washington were pretty much on hold until the governors there received guidance from the Department of Justice,” Hudak said in an interview.

The Drug Policy Alliance's Nadelmann agrees. “I don't think we're going to have quite the same green light coming out of the new administration,” he said in a conference call with reporters.

Reversing the Obama administration's hands-off approach to marijuana would be as simple as withdrawing the Cole memo, Hudak says. And if that were to happen, it's unclear what the effect would be both in states that already have recreational marijuana and in places where state governments are setting up marijuana markets after this year's ballot measures.

“It could have a chilling effect on the willingness of states to move forward with the creation of these systems,” Hudak said. “It could also have a pretty chilling effect on investment in marijuana businesses.”
