Anyone else get seasonal depression?
#23850309 - 11/20/16 01:15 AM (7 years, 2 months ago) |

Last winter was hard for me. October rolls in and it starts getting colder and darker, to me it feels like the beginning of the end.
Til today its been mild and unusually warm and sunny. But today it was cold, the streets empty, quiet outside, all the trees barren, cold and wet. This is how its going to be for the next 4 months mostly.
I cant stand that it'll soon look the same at 6am as it does 4:30pm. Last winter i was unemployed, and it was especially hard. I felt trapped indoors. Hours and days began to blend together. Just constant hopelessness and dread.
Anyone have any tips to fight seasonal depression? Ive made up my mind that im going to really fight it which ime is the most important part of dealing with depression.
Im thinking I'll try to incorporate a gym routine into my schedule and maybe maximize my time out in sunlight.
Ive actually considered buying lamps to chill under to simulate sunlight.

Our insulated igloos and beaver pelts keep us pretty warm In all seriousness though that is the difference, I like hunting and hiking with a challenge against my life and health. That's just me though P.S I enjoy like -10 degrees C

I'm really having a tough time already. It's november now and it's light out for only 6-8 hours, and horrible overcast, rain and winds all day long. I'm starting to lose my mind.

I don't mind winter at all, I just don't like it after it's been here for a while. At first I always welcome the change, but after a few months I don't like it so much.
Spring and Autumn are my two favorite times of year though, they are not to hot/cold. Summer it gets so hot and humid, winter it gets so cold and dry.

Same dude, I don't like how hot the summer is and I despise how cold and dark the winter is. They call my climate "temperate" but I'd like to disagree. Wish I had a more stable climate lol. How about 15-20C all year long, with some rain every week on Thursday? December has 50 mean monthly sunshine hours for The Netherlands. I will cherish those..

Some vitamin d probably is a good idea.
Ugh left the window cracked last night, woke up with a post nasal drip/numbness. Thats another fun thing about the season.
When i was younger, winter didnt bother me much but now it seems like the cold and dark are just too much.

I was talking to a friend of mine today and we both agreed on something...things are different than when we were younger.
Winter didnt bother us but now that we have responsibilities that we cant bitch out on and the multiple winters we've experienced... I dunno its different now.

What kind of light bulbs do you have around your house normally? Incandescents or CFL's? I ask because, as I understand, CFL's will offer a spectrum of light closer to actual sunlight.

No cfl bulbs any more :/ My last one of the lot burned out last year.
I used to get up in the morning and chill under two of those spiral cfl bulbs to help me wake up in those dark winter mornings. It was in the hopes that routine and some bright light would keep me going. Oh yeah i get insomnia pretty frequently, especially durring the winter.
I tell you one of the most terrible feelings is finally being able to actually fall asleep in the morning some time while its still dark and waking up around 4pm and its dark again. Its disorienting and depressing.
Like i said, now that im older i have no more tolerence for winter, it completely drains me. Cold and ugly, everything is more difficult, sore back from shoveling, packages containing sweet chemical relief frequently are delayed because of the weather

So, I have pretty gnarly depression that gets worse as the days get shorter. This year, I'm trying to spend at least one hour a day in the sunlight, which is harder than you'd think, really. I was born in Cleveland and moved to Florida thinking the abundance of sunshine would help, but it doesn't.
I also have this crazy insomnia where I get up around 4 am, then when I finally do go back down, it's like 15 minutes before I have to go to work or something.
The only thing that's ever worked for me to at least take the bite off the holidays is mushrooms. 1-3g every 2 or 3 days. It's not enough to get you tripping...at least not me...but it's enough.

Yeah, surprisingly. The sun is up early in the morning. I'm usually trying to get in the shower and get to work in those precious first moments of the day. Then, by the time I'd get out of work, it's already night time.

For some reason the fact that the days are shorter down south as well evaded me.
I could handle not seeing so much as a glimpse of sunlight in a day as long as the nights were warm and everything was stil ALIVE.
Most of what bothers me is the cold death that is a midwest winter. Ice cold, easy to become ill, bleak, no plant life, no sounds of animals/insects. Id say thats 80% of it right there and the lack of sun is the other 20%.
I remember my first winter time mush trip. At first it was pretty cool. It was snowing, everything was covered in a few inches of snow. I was enjoying looking at my frozen pool and the uniform rows of snow covered fence. The glistening of the snow and all.
After a while things got to me and the trip turned..it was so incredibly dead silent out, extremely eerie feeling. It bothered me very very deeply. It made me feel just as empty and baron inside

I think I do but, I have never been diagnosed. More importantly, I am not a pussy. My advice would be to read Reality Transurfing or listen to the audio book on youtube.
One thing you can do for anxiety, panic attacks or depression is exercise. Change your physiology through activity. Even taking a walk will change your state of being. Try meditation and yoga. Its great for the mind, body, and soul connection.
Adapt a well healthy balanced diet. You are what you eat. In North America, most people are eating donuts, and growing love handles. Be different. Turn down the volume through meditation, quieting your mind, yoga, deep breathing techniques, try a body scan or get an app like calm.
Reconnect with nature. Call family and friends. One way to get out of the solipsism is reconnecting with people, service to others, and escaping self. Too much internal intention can affect external intention. Don't take your thoughts too seriously.

Depression sucks. Whether is seasonal or whatever one bad day can be the worst or a a catalyst of something bad. Ive struggled with depression for the most of my adult life, if you ever need to talk we're here, am i am here specifically, its always worse than we are willing to admit.
