Deathcaps?

Hey there,
Recently, I came across some Amanitas that I recognized to be the notorious death cap, Amanita phalloides (photos #1 and #2)...

Without passing much thought about it, I came across a similar looking mushroom a few days later which I photographed and immediately assumed was another death cap. While checking out my photos today, I'm realizing that I could very well be wrong. I did not take a spore print, nor get a shot of the gills (which I observed to be frost white). Could this fungus possibly be Volvopluteus gloiocephalus? Or is it most likely another Amanita phalloides?

These were observed in the suburbs of the San Francisco East Bay Area. The volva of the second mushroom was quite small, and not as obvious as was seen in the first mushroom. The stipe was about 1.25 cm across, and the volva had a diameter of just about 1.5 cm. In comparison, the stipe of the first mushroom was about 2.5 cm across, with the volva being substantially larger (approximately 3-4 cm across).
Thanks!

Death caps typically have a sort of metallic olive green sheen to them. Amanita phalloides
There is a variety which grows in the SF Bay Area which is pure white, the Amanita phalloides var. alba.

Based on my limited experience, I'd be willing to say that there probably is a full color spectrum of death caps from very white to very green.

I don't think so. But it is probably the genus containing the highest number of toxic species.

Maybe you're thinking of Destroying Angel, Amanita bisporigera

Looks that way to me. Spore print would separate them out if you wanted to be sure.

The volva is a bit well developed and bulbous for that, but yea the spore color should be clear.

Clearly far more edible species than toxic species, just look at subsect Vaginatae.
