Oyster cake questions
    #23849309 - 11/19/16 05:16 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Hey there. This is my first attempt at growing oysters. I went with the blue oyster variety  the were birthed on the 13th. They first were cold shocked and then were soaked and rolled in dry, clean verm. Literally the next day I saw some pinning. Its been six days and the pins are indeed gettinbg longer and more organized in their structure but far  from lookin like oyster mushrooms. There is Also a heavy overlay of mycelium too. It literally looks like clouds are coming off the cakes! the fruits that are forming look a lot like thin, insanely dense clusters of coral. The terrarium didn't have any holes in it (as this was how I grew cubes many years ago and when I tried w the hole drilled containers, I didn't have good results). I also was misting w every faning until yesterday. I have a cheap RH meter from Petsmart and its been reading between 77-85RH. The perlite is about 3 inches thick and its the course variety.

I would really like to turn this grow around if able but couple use some direction. Does anyone know how I could do that? If pins are already six or seven days old, are they basically stuck or can they keep growing? If so, is reaching full maturity a realistic outcome? I have some pics but I'd like to apologize ahead of time for their quality.

Thanks

:dancingbear::dancingbear: :dancingbear:

Not enough fresh air, Oysters need tons of fresh air once the pinning starts all over.
Cubensis do not need anywhere near the fresh air Oysters need to fruit.

Also I have one fully colonized jar that's just chilling right now. I goofed up and used a mason jar with a wider bottom and there's Noway of birthing it regularly. Could use some direction of what to do with it. Fruit directly in jar? Maybe just scrape off the dry verm layer and pour In some water, then pour out and case with a layer or verm or verm and coco? Or would it be best to use it for spawn? I've been wanting to try out a cardboard grow recently. Any ideas on the best way to handle this... I don't wanna waste it

Cool thanks Ferather. How often should I fan it out? And last night is when I poked some holes in the terrarium, right above the perlite going all the way around. Should I add a fuck ton more?

They need FAE, I would say keep the lid open on that tote, they like the moisture but they rely on fresh air far more.

No way? All the way off? Damn that's a big appetite for air lol.

Do you still think they got a shot at reaching full maturity?

Also what's a good RH to try and keep in there, if able?

I think they might look a little funky, but I think you can get them going.
And yeah, you can open air fruit oysters if you mist them, they really need a lot of air, I would either leave that lid of or at least open good and get some air moving around or put a ton of holes in your SGFC like RR's design.

You could fruit it from the jar I would think, no casing needed. Also Ferather has some really cool teks for wood lovers he has been working on, that may be a good use of that jar as spawn:shrug:
Ferather what do you think?

They look clean, and the high CO2 has only caused them to try and colonize (fluffy patches).
It thinks it is underground-inside a tree, and is pushing the fruits to higher O2.

I see no bacteria or mold, no metabolites. Seems very clean.
This means you have many options, which is good.

Read my pocket guide, and then other teks.

Thanks man, they're clean def... Well as far as I can tell. Amazingly fluffy mycelial develop. A whole lot prettier of a myc than cubes... Plus that smell is awesome! I can't put my finger on it but the term 'velvety' came to mind when I birthed them. I still get a nice whiff of it every now and again  so nice.

Yo one thing, how do keep humidity high and what is the absolute lowest RH do you let them get to? I woke up and the RH was Like 65! so I misted down the bin hardcore, even each cake very lightly, now the lids back on the bin until the number goes up. Then when 82-90 is reached, I was going to pop it off again. It took a long time to get down so low yesterday. It was stuck at 80 most of the time the lid was off.

Though good news, I'm seeing some def blue tips (or heads rather) forming from yesterday... Before it looked like white alien grass or coral. Now I think were moving in the right direction :super:

Thanks guys  and right on feather, I like what I've read so far. Nice work

Try turning the lid around so there is a gap either side, it might be enough.

Good to hear, I thought they might get their little caps as soon as they got some air.
I would shoot for that 80 right now, dropping down isn't going to hurt anything as long as they don't dry out, likeI was saying they will do way better with low RH and high FAE than the opposite. That's the tricky part with passive fruiting chambers, getting that perfect mix.

Get a 50-60 liter laundry basket, and some 80 liter clear bin bags. You will also need a length of wood or similar.
Place the basket inside the bag, the opening is to one side, tie the slack end off, cut slots everywhere.

Cut an "H" on the top of the basket, use the wood in the middle to support the flaps.
Add holes or more slots to the top flaps, use like a SGFC, add perlite.

You can add more slots or holes as you go if needed.

Thanks ferather, I'll give a hand at that one day:super:

Okay I def have some fruits growing and maturing. It seems like about seventy percent of the coral tips developed that lovely bluish gray color and pushed toward a more conventional growth pattern. The only thing is that the caps are super small. I honestly have never eaten or have grown oysters before and I just read something that said that the stems are thrown out for culinary purposes. Do any of you ever eat the stems? I mostly have a stem harvest

I'm hoping to have a more bountiful second flush :super: but if not, its all good... I'm still learning the ropes

Also when should I pick? Some of the caps are turning, almost cupping, upward.

They are probably too deformed to finish growing as you would like. I eat the whole thing.
Some caps are used for cheese melts and so on, its normal to eat all of it.

The caps formed due to lots of fresh air, so good going with that.
I would chop those off, and hope for another flush.

Awesome, thanks guys. I would've been in the dark with a mess on my hands if it wasn't for your help :super:

And man you aren't lying..  Fresh air made all the difference and fast too. Literally not even a full 24hrs later, I saw a respectable amount of the tips turn blue!

So next flush, should I take off the lid again after the mycelium begins to recover or when I see pins again? I wanna do this right from Here on. I'm determined to harvest big wavy brain flushes one day! Looking forward to doing a bulk grow one day too... Where I can get some really fat flushes :yesnod: :hehehe: :awesome:

Y'all kick butt, thanks again. Oysters are the bomb, I def wanna have a perma spot in my garden for them from here on :seriousthumbsup:
