Matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) ID Confirmation?
    #23849185 - 11/19/16 04:39 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

I'm pretty confident but as always better safe than sorry so if I could get a confirmation on these before I eat them I'd be grateful.  Also has anyone had success drying these for later use?

Habitat: Under conifer duff (still bad at conifer ID) and huckleberry, northern California.  Within a couple miles of the coast.

Gills: White gills, adnate.  Closely spaced.

Stem: Thick, white with the lower portion "scruffy".  Slight annulus remnants on the older specimen. An inch to a few inches long, maybe an inch to 1.5 inches thick.  Pointed/tapered at the base.

Cap: 2-5 inches in diameter, white with brownish/yellowish staining and "scruffy" appearance.  Curled over and round in the younger specimen but opened up nearly flat in the older.  Thick, not at all brittle in texture.

Spore print color: Pending.

Bruising: None noticed, other than the orange/brownish stains on the cap.

Other information: Spicy, faintly cinnamon-earthy scent.  Like the matsutake I've seen at the store lately.

They certainly look right. The odor is one of the best features. There are some poisonous mushrooms that can have that odor, but they don't look like that.

As far as drying, I much prefer freezing. Just wash and trim the dirt off, then cut them up and freeze them.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks so much to both of you.  Matsutake was my personal goal for a new edible wild find this season.  Success!
