He will be OK, but there's a list of the worlds 50 most violent cities on a business oriented site, just search 50 most violent cities and it should come up.

Most are in Mexico, Central/South America.

Yes I'm aware, but Costa Rica is not one of those countries. It would be a legitimate fear in a place like Mexico or Brazil though.

Not to mention all the endemic diseases. Have you ever seen that show "monsters inside me?" Every other story is about some horrific parasite someone picked up traveling from Costa Rica to Mexico. Themovement already looks emaciated. I doubt he could survive a bought of malaria or dengue fever. And he'll definitely pick up zika and end up leaving a trail of tiny headed babies in his wake.

Believe it or not it has always been my dream to get infested with botfly larvaes inside of me, I feel like it would be so satisfying to squeeze one of those out of you, like popping the biggest pimple of your life or something.

Or at least let me come across a dog with botfly larvae crawling all over him.

Yeah but it's nothing a couple antibiotics and some ointment cream can't cure. It's not like you'll get gangrene and your arm will fall off from one of those botflies, unless you're really unlucky or in filthy deplorable conditions.

Buy a bag of keyhangers with the name/picture of the city/state/country you are from. It can basically be anything you want but I think something that is sorta personal works best. Have one hanging on your backpack at all times.
Then, when you have a cool interaction with some locals or other travelers (somebody gives you a ride or whatever) you give them this awesome token you have been carying with you for all this time.
They dont know you have a whole bag of the things.

People will be so stoked to get something like that

To get from Costa Rica to Mexico you need to traverse two of the most dangerous countries in the world. He won't be kidnapped but it's doubtful he'll survive.
