    #23844287 - 11/18/16 06:45 AM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Just saw u on TV: Viceland's Hamilton Phramcopia.

U made it man! Some serious comsideration for being a mycologist specializing in rare mushroom species.

What's funny is he mentioned going to Mexico to do something with Vice and I asked something along the lines of "are they sending that creep Hamilton down there to interview you?"

Nailed it.

Neato.  Although Vice's article lists the Mycena as "grow in the dark mushrooms".  sigh.  Step away from the bong.

He says Psilocybe zapotecorum is the most beautiful of the psilocybes.
Showed the aged land slides he found them in. Pretty amazing.

He was asked about his likes and it was like actives meh, edibles meh.....but really rare cool unknown species......yes please!

Showed some Psilocybe caerulescens the size of summer squash and half the size of your arm due to the substrate being from cut sugar cane.

Yeah. Their equipment and setup was nice, but they talked like they skipped school a little bit to often...

I liked the amazing caerulescens garden and Alan's zapotecorum habitat. Looks like you picked the time to visit that place!

Nice job! All of us on Shroomery can see that you put your heart and soul into your interest in mushrooms. Good to see someone so devoted get some wider credibility. I can't talk for the rest, but I'm proud to be associated with you, even in cyberspace -- and not just because of the TV coverage. You and the other experts on here have helped nurture my interest in mushrooms. I came here as someone looking to trip on "magic mushrooms" and now thanks to people like you, the "magic" comes secondary to the mushrooms -- all mushrooms are magic now.

They can get that big on their own without sugar cane, they grow huge is Georgia right out of the red clay.
Alan found a freaking massive patch with gigantic fruits growing in an abandoned mill area in Mexico.

I pronounce them in a very anglicised way and always will, I think. At least my pronunciations of "Mycena" and "Psathyrella" were consistent.

Some of these words for mushrooms have no vocalization to me and exist solely as a pictures of the letters in my mind.
I apologize if that sounds like nonsense but I'm not sure how else to put it.

I was pleasantly surprised by how well researched Hamilton was. Usually when people make shows about mushrooms they have no idea what the hell they are talking about and it makes it hard to watch.

i agree on the pronouncation. How they pronounced "psilocybe" was very weird!

I always pronounce it "Sill-Low-Cybe".

Also those Florida pickers near their stuff. I wonder what their screennames are

On the cultivators, i will argue it does take years to master growing. Its not hard to learn but it is hard to master it where u can get consistent results grow-to-grow.

I have pronounced it "s-eye-low-sibe" for a long time and I think it will take something for me to change that.

I'm sure that reading that will make some people cringe.

In the end though, a lot of it is taken from Latin, and we have only written accounts and guesses of pronunciation for large amounts. So screw you. :tongue2:

I don't think it's a regional thing. For me it just read that way back when I first read it.

I'm not saying that you're suggesting it is. I don't know where all the different pronunciations come from.

The farmers were jaw jacking about those in the cane being the strongest, is this likely? I'm aware they are most likely not aware of all the other species and not lab rats. Ham ate a fresh one that looked to be about a gram and felt the effects.  Sugar cane, steroids for fungus....
Aren't allenii supposed to be the most potent?

Yeah that was a joke. Using tiny tiny monotubs with no headspace, the whole room setup was weird an unnecessary. They were using a glove box, not a still air box or flowhood. Lots of stuff wasn't done well. Implying cubensis is difficult to grow...

Anyways, enjoyed Alans part though. Cool to see Oaxaca.

Funny, I'm also British,  but for me it's sill-low-sigh-bee.

I don't think it's a regional thing. For me it just read that way back when I first read it.

I'm not saying that you're suggesting it is. I don't know where all the different pronunciations come from.

Yes - I had assumed there might be a regional influence, but it may not make sense for words like this that are not in common parlance. Rather, I suppose, new pronunciations are being spontaneously generated in isolation and then not necessarily brought in line with consensus because they're not so often used in speech.

It finally got posted online and I just watched it for the first time last night.  I liked my segment quite a bit.  It starts at 23:00.

Did you ever get to identify the "giant dangling cluster of pseudofistulina"?

I need to find that collection and sequence it, I think it will turn out to be near Polyporus tuberaster.  I brought the collection to Laura Guzman and she said it's not one she had seen before.  She hunts in the maple forest quite a bit, which is where that video was shot.

Are you in Mexico this year? Are hipsters flocking down there in search of Psilocybes?

Not yet, but I will be soon.  I haven't heard of any hipsters doing that recently, it's mostly Mexican biologists who do that.
