even pinset forming idea

Do you guys think this would be effective? After casing you take something that looks like a bed of nails (many nails in neat rows, pounded through wood), and very lightly push it through your casing layer until you've penetrated only the casing depth. Intead of nails it would be more like objects with a circumfrence of say 1mm, sterilized of course. Would this create perfect tubes for the growth to travel upward?

I think that would be like trying to train a dog to sit on a toilet.
No matter how much you hope it wont happen mycelium is like a weed for instance it just grows where it wants to. You wont be able to guide it to where you want it.

I see your point, but I'm poistive that normal clumping and matting down of the casing contributes to where and when it will poke through

Yes, but using those conditions to make mycelium grow as desired wouldn't work. Don't know why it doesn't, just doesn't.

Might help a little bit, but similar things have been tried before to less than earth shattering results.

use needles and suped glue the to a board. them are small you can heat them to sterlize them, so they should be perfect.

Scratching the surface is a much better idea in my opinion.  After you have partial colonization use a fork (that is sterile) and stir the casing layer around, mixing colonized and non-colonized parts up well.  Incubate until the casing layer is totally colonized, then spriinkle lightly soem more casing material on top, and fruit. Always gets 'em even

Just FYI, I have seen dogs and cats not only sit on a toilet, but shit in them too! So u must be saying that Marks idea is not only a good one, but will work? LOL
