Popcorn tek help / not growing
    #23842283 - 11/17/16 03:43 PM (7 years, 3 months ago)

this is my second attempt at starting a batch from a syringe , the first time got horribly infected.

This is what I did

I soaked the popcorn for 24 hours, then did a 45 min slow boil. I then put it in my pressure cooker for a hour, and made sure everything is clean . (nothing is currently infected)

I injected my jars with approx 1 ml of syring liquid. Covered with tin foil and made a few holes for air movement and covered those holes with a cotton swab.

Now, 5 days later I see no signs of growth at all, just a jar full of corn. It doesnt look like there is much moisture in the jar, but the corn is hydrated properly I think. Also, its kept at room temp.

So wtf, am I just being paranoid?

what tek did you use.

you got a lot of wierdo info goin on.

pc for only 60min?
spores to grain is risky.
a lid of tin foil and a cotton swab?
it can take a week plus for spores to germinate.

i wouldnt use popcorn:thumbdown:

pics bruh

Five days isn't that long when you're growing from spores. Wait longer. Give it a couple weeks before you start worrying.

Also, popcorn sucks. I use rye, and if I couldn't get rye, I'd use wild bird seed or wheat. I wouldn't use popcorn, ever.

I am having a hard time understanding you.

Here is some guidance:

Popcorn is shitty. I'll let you use the search function to learn why.

Use a proper filter, especially when working with grain. I'll let you use the search function to learn why.

Do not pc for sixty minutes. Pc for at least ninety. Two hours is fine too. I'll let you use the search function to learn why.

Multispore is slow. In fact, it is the slowest. I'll let you use the search function to learn why.

Instead of doing whatever it is that you are attempting, I suggest following a tek that is well known and will give you a decent shot at being successful. Use the search function. It will help you learn everything you need to know.

I missed this part on my first read. Yeah, you're fucked. Do it right or don't bother. You mention that your first grow got horribly infected... what are you doing differently this time to correct that? Hint: you're going to get contaminated again because you are doing it wrong.

What exactly have I done wrong here?  My first attempt went bad because I didn't use a PC and thought boiling was good enough for sterilization.  I was wrong.

I used cotton balls instead of a filter because it's what I had and I'm sure just as good.  I did follow a tek  and they are all basically all the same.  If I get any results from this I will try grains but there are lots of posts saying popcorn is as good or even better then grains.  Perhaps not, but I figured its cheap and easy to start with

You thought boiling was good enough, and found out you were wrong.

You are sure cotton balls are a fine jar filtration solution. Your original post makes it sound like you pressure cooked your jars, and then added unsterilized foil and cotton after inoculation. If that's the case, your grow is most likely over before it even started. If you did pressure cook the cotton, you're still fucked but I'm curious whether the cotton emerged from this process dry, and how long it will take to get contaminated.

You found some low-rent growers who made posts saying that popcorn is great. Cool, maybe one of them will show up and help out. Meanwhile, myself and most people on here that I trust would never use popcorn. That said, while popcorn sucks, it can be used and it's probably not the reason your grow is failing.

As someone else suggested, if you are a beginner, you are going to struggle and fail your grows if you go by what you naively think will work when you have no experience. For the best shot at good results with decent performance, follow a proven tek to the T. For any sort of grain project, this means using a tried and true jar filtration method such as synthetic filter discs, tyvek, or polyfill. Cotton absorbs moisture and stays wet, and will subsequently promote contamination because it's an organic material. All recommended jar filtration systems are synthetic, and do not hold or absorb water.

If you don't want to invest in doing it right, then don't bother. I recommend doing BRF tek first, too.

Well correct me if I am wrong here,  but pollyfill is bought in a craft store and is essentially and is used to stuff pillows.  I'm not saying cotton balls are superior but not much different.  And it is covering a few small holes.

Again,  nothing is contaminated so thanks for the advice and I will consider it in the future,  but I can do without your attitude sir

Out

Again, cotton is natural, will rot, and will hold water. Polyfill is plastic, will not rot, and will not hold water. They look the same but they are not very similar at all.

The only attitude you're getting here is the generous free advice of those more experienced than you. Even advice you don't care about or don't want to hear may be valid, and serves to bump your thread so that others are more likely to see it and offer their advice.

Keep the thread updated as to how it goes.
